As the San Antonio Spurs inch closer to their best season in nearly a decade, they may soon have a chance to join NBA royalty. The Spurs have already won five championships, something unheard of for a mid-market team.

However, if they were able to win a championship this season, they would join the Chicago Bulls as one of just five teams with six titles.

That would make San Antonio one of the best teams in NBA history. Perhaps that is already the case with them having the highest win percentage among franchises in league history.

They have also had long stretches of sustained success. That includes making the playoffs a record 22 consecutive seasons and consecutive 50-win seasons with 18.

It can be easy to take for granted, given how long San Antonio was a contender under David Robinson and then Tim Duncan. But after missing the playoffs for six straight seasons, Spurs fans have begun to get an idea of how special this team is.

Victor Wembanyama is pushing the Spurs closer to NBA royalty status

It wasn't that long ago that San Antonio's rebuild looked as though it had no clear direction. Luckily, they landed the number one overall pick in 2023 and have been on an upward swing ever since.

Adding a superstar in Victor Wembanyama has helped San Antonio fast-track their rebuild. Doing so has helped them get back into the title picture much sooner than anyone could have predicted.

In fact, San Antonio could finish with the second-best record in the NBA. Better yet, they could even have home court for three of the four playoff rounds if they were to make the NBA Finals. Who would have thought?

Wembanyama could deliver the Spurs their sixth title this season

That turnaround is made all the more impressive by the fact that the Spurs had the eighth-worst record in the NBA last season. Many even predicted them to win only around 40 games this year.

Now, they are on pace to win 60 games and appear to be the second-best team in the NBA, only behind the reigning champion Oklahoma City Thunder. However, San Antonio has beaten them four times this season.

Haters point to the fact this team has very little playoff experience. That is definitely a knock on this young Spurs team.

To their credit, the Silver and Black have several veterans who have tasted playoff success. Better yet, they are young enough and talented enough to potentially overwhelm more experienced playoff teams.

It also doesn't hurt that they have a top-5 player in the NBA in Wembanyama, who is still emerging. If he has a strong playoff, then San Antonio's lack of experience could fly out the window, and Wembanyama could deliver the Spurs their sixth championship. That would give them a taste of NBA royalty status.
