San Antonio Spurs fans are anticipating another MVP campaign from Victor Wembanyama, but a sleeper candidate is emerging that could hinder his path to that highly coveted title. Stephen Curry has been an offensive juggernaut early on while leading the Golden State Warriors to a strong start this season.
Of course, Curry is no stranger to being in this conversation. He's already won the award twice along with a quartet of championships, and is arguably the greatest point guard ever to set foot on the hardwood. But given the Warriors' disappointments over the years-along with his aging-another MVP campaign seemed a bit far-fetched.
But here we are: the Dubs are one of the hottest teams in the NBA, and Curry is lighting up the scoreboard, sitting just behind Luka Doncic in points per game this season. He's been an unexpected early competitor to Wemby for the league's highest individual honor.
Curry's making a compelling case right now
The veteran point guard is averaging 30 points per night while shooting 46.8% from the floor and 42.9% from beyond the arc. More impressively, Jimmy Butler's absence hasn't kept Curry from helping the Dubs perform at a high level, as he's led them to some big wins against quality Western Conference competitors.
Last week, they beat the Denver Nuggets in a game where he didn't miss a single shot or free throw. A few days later, he torched the Los Angeles Lakers for 31 points while draining eight three-pointers. Those were the two biggest victories of their five-game winning streak.
That isn't to suggest Wemby's been any less impressive. He's had his own share of dynamic performances, and the Spurs have been really good as of late. But with what he's done for this Warriors squad in the first few weeks of the season, Curry's been creeping up in that MVP race, giving The Alien another competitor to keep on his radar.
Wemby's already has a lot of competition
It's not just Curry who's been playing MVP-level basketball at this early point of the season. Luka Doncic has also been on an offensive tear for the Lakers. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is another player to watch, as he has a chance to lead a beaten-up Thunder roster to success in the West. Jayson Tatum has also been impressive in the Boston Celtics' first season without Jaylen Brown.
Wemby has his work cut out for him. It won't be easy to outperform each of these stars this season, but if he does manage to pull it off, it'll make his first MVP victory that much sweeter. But to stay ahead in the race, he has to keep those other contenders in his sights, including that point guard in San Francisco.
