After a successful sixth-man stint, San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama just rejoined the Spurs starting lineup but not before giving fans a glimpse of the future. He and rookie Dylan Harper and Wembanyama proved to be a dynamic duo when paired together.
The one-two punch of Harper and Wembanyama has been throwing absolute haymakers in limited minutes. In the 12 games they have both played and shared time on the court together, they have a shocking +40.2 net rating.
Not just that, but that pairing has a better offensive rating than a Wembanyama and De'Aaron Fox combo. They also have a better defensive rating than Wembanyama and Stephon Castle. Go figure.
Victor Wembanyama and Dylan Harper are the Spurs' dynamic duo
At first glance, the Harper and Wembanyama pairing shouldn't be better than the Fox or Castle pairing with Wembanyama, but hear me out. Harper is the best passer of the trio. He also leads the team in drives per minute, edging out both Castle and Fox, who rank 15th and 17th in the entire NBA.
Offensively, Harper hasn't played consistently with a stretch five, and he and Wembanyama sharing the floor has given him plenty of spacing. As the Spurs' best playmaker, he showed it when he had 10 dimes in just 23 minutes in their second game against the Oklahoma Thunder, who are an elite defensive team.
That was primarily when playing with Wembanyama, and Harper's defensive emergence has helped make the duo work. Most expected him to be passable on defense given his height at 6'5" and length with a 7'0" wingspan.
Even so, he has proven to be a good defender, despite only being a rookie. He also seems to lock in when the Spurs are playing top teams. He helped keep the Spurs in their NBA Cup Finals game against the New York Knicks with his play in the fourth quarter. Against OKC, he was downright disruptive, forcing five turnovers in their second meeting.
Victor Wembanyama and Dylan Harper are the Spurs' future
With Harper proving himself on that end of the floor, San Antonio has no weak links defensively in their rotation. None. Pair Harper with Wembanyama, and he has a huge rim deterrent playing behind him, meaning teams are settling for jumpers.
Now that he is back in the starting lineup, the numbers prove that he can thrive while playing alongside Fox, Castle, and especially Harper. That's huge since it allows the Spurs to mix and match and eventually play all four together. That is the goal.
It may not happen this season with those four only playing a few minutes together. Still, it could be a big part of San Antonio's future, with Harper and Wembanyama already showing everyone what they can do.
