Victor Wembanyama is making Thunder confront an uncomfortable reality

You might as well run and duck for cover.

Oklahoma City has a Victor Wembanyama problem. Sam Presti has spent years building a complete roster full of players who can account for almost any situation. They have finishers, midrange shooters, three-point specialists, wing defenders, and rim protectors. But none of those things matter very much to Wemby. The reality is, despite their arsenal, OKC is ill-equipped to handle an alien.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander dropped a quote that quickly gained popularity after putting up 35 points in a March win over the Denver Nuggets. "I have the answers to the test, but I gotta see the questions first," the two-time MVP told reporters after the game. Well, that was only two months ago, so it didn't take very long to vex the confident pupil.

Unfortunately for OKC, the equation Victor Wembanyama presents doesn't have any multiple-choice responses.

The Thunder have no answer for Wembanyama

Wemby is averaging 30 points, 13 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 blocks in the four games played in the Western Conference Finals. The Thunder have guarded him with Alex Caruso, Jalen Williams, Chet Holmgren, and Isaiah Hartenstein. Their efforts have mostly been failed attempts to stop him, minus the blatant holding and underhanded tactics they deployed here and there.

Other guys have had small opportunities to get destroyed, but those four guys have drawn the assignment the most. Now Williams is out with another hamstring injury, and Caruso started getting alley-oops thrown over his head. The Spurs figured out how to attack defenses when they put a smaller player on Vic, putting more onus on Hartenstein and Holmgren.

Nothing they've done has truly worked to slow down Wembanyama's efficiency. The most effective defense for the Alien has been the Alien. When he hangs out on the perimeter too often or doesn't demand the ball enough, he takes himself out of the offense, bailing out OKC's defense. When he plays with force, they're just as helpless as the other 28 teams in the NBA.

That doesn't even take the defensive side of the ball into account. SGA said it himself when discussing the challenge the Spurs' defense presents: "They have multiple guys that are tenacious; they get into the ball, and then they have Wemby behind them, and they know that," the Thunder's star guard shared after Game 4.

Wembanyama won Defensive Player of the Year unanimously for a reason. His range and intelligence are off the charts, making his already talented teammates better. They use their strengths to lean into his, and that's a recipe for destruction. Four games into the WCF, the Thunder are still searching for answers because Wemby is the one test in basketball that doesn't come with an answer key.
