Throw that first game against Oklahoma City in the garbage. That wasn't Victor Wembanyama. Some imposter snuck into Frost Bank Center, or maybe he was body-snatched by a rival alien race or something. Either way, what we've been getting since is much closer to the man Spurs Nation expected when the 2026-27 season tipped off.

"I want some nasty" likely echoes in the minds of longtime San Antonio fans everywhere when the team isn't playing with enough force. Gregg Popovich inadvertently created one of the most iconic moments in Spurs history in a 2012 playoff series against the Thunder. It's a phrase that says so much in so few words, and it goes doubly for the best player on the team.

Wembanyama has an MVP to win and he's playing like it

Wembanyama knew he didn't play well enough to start the season. He wasn't himself, overthinking his approach for whatever reason, and since then, Vic has been trending up.

Houston Rockets - 25 points, 13 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks, 42.9% FG
Dallas Mavericks - 23 points, 7 rebounds, 4 blocks, 2 assists, 1 steal, 50% FG
Sacramento Kings - 29 points, 10 rebounds, 5 blocks, 2 assists, 2 steals, 66.7% FG
Utah Jazz - 36 points, 14 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals, 2 blocks, 56% FG

The Alien went hard after the MVP trophy last season, but he didn't pick up his scoring until the back half of the campaign. Wemby hoped his floor-warping defense would be enough to convince voters to lean his way. When it became clear he would need to put more points on the board, he did so, pushing his average up to 25 points per game by the end of the year.

Unfortunately, the voters didn't put enough stock in that late push or his defense because they didn't only choose Shai Gilgeous-Alexander over him; Nikola Jokic also earned more votes than San Antonio's franchise star. Vic won't be waiting around this time. Points will be put on the board. A lot of them. He hinted at that last night while discussing his first 30-point game of the year.

"It's not something that should be rare or anything. It's just getting reps," he told the media.

Now is the time for Hector Banana Bread to build a rhythm. The Spurs are going through the weaker part of their schedule over the next few weeks. They'll have multiple games against the Jazz, plus meetings with the Bulls, the Pelicans, the Clippers, and the Kings. Those are a lot of bad teams on the docket. Every single one of them should feel Wemby's wrath. It's what Pop would want.
