Victor Wembanyama deal makes the loudest statement imaginable about his teammates

Now that's a leader.

Victor Wembanyama just left $51 million on the table in his contract extension with the Spurs. It's one of the biggest illustrations of an athlete putting his money where his mouth is, or maybe taking the money out of his mouth (?). Either way, The Alien was crystal clear about his love for his teammates, and he just proved it.

There's only one reason and one reason only to leave so much money on the table: you're not worried about finances. Why would he be? Wemby is on a path to global superstardom. He'll be drowning in cash from endorsement deals.

The Alien has been clear from the beginning about his desire to win and win big consistently. But Vic knows he can't do it alone, and he already has the talent by his side to do something special in San Antonio.

The Wemby/Harper/Castle trio will be wreaking havoc for the next decade

The Spurs' new money man has never been one to mince words, and the reigning
Defensive Player of the Year certainly won't lie to you. He's given glowing endorsements for his young playmakers, expressing gratitude that they're along for the ride with him and hoping they stay there.

"I want to share the court with him for as long as possible," he said about Dylan Harper.
"He 100% deserved to be the No. 1 pick, but I'm so glad he wasn't," was his statement on Stephon Castle.

Wembanyama's goal is to be the greatest player of all time, but even Michael Jordan and LeBron James couldn't do it alone. They needed their Scottie Pippens, Dwyane Wades, Dennis Rodmans, and Kyrie Irvings. The best athletes to ever lace up a pair of sneakers couldn't win championships by themselves, and Vic knows he needs titles to be considered among the greats.

Now, think about the group San Antonio has in tow for the foreseeable future. Wemby is actually The Alien. The things he does on the court are out of this world. He should have three DPOYs already in a just world, and he impacts offense with a gravity and skill set we've never seen before on a player his size.

Keeping the Spurs' core together is crucial to Wemby's journey

Castle stepped on the scene and bullied his way to a Rookie of the Year award in a season he wasn't favored to win, giving the Spurs two winners of the trophy in consecutive seasons. In his sophomore year, he's locking up top-tier offensive stars, assisting his way to 10th in the league, and scoring like he's been a pro for years. The kid put up a couple of 30-point triple-doubles. Like, come on.

Dylan Harper was so good that he has fans asking the team to trade De'Aaron Fox. Something that 100% will not happen... yet. He gives the Silver and Black an impossible conundrum to throw at opponents off the bench, strengthening the team to unbearable heights. He was the best player on the floor during several stints in the postseason, and his fearless demeanor for someone so young is unparalleled.

Why wouldn't Wembanyama want to make sure it's easy for the Spurs to keep them together? It's the smart thing to do. He also knows the three of them will need solid role players, and saving the team money ensures they can fill out the roster with players who aren't just scraping by on veteran-minimum contracts. The Spurs' superstar wants real hoopers beside him, and he'll have that.

He made sure of it.
