The San Antonio Spurs are approaching the 2025 NBA trade deadline with a rational sense of urgency. Victor Wembanyama is proving in just his second season that his unique contributions can lead the team to immediate success, and San Antonio is understandably trying to maximize every moment of his career.
The most commonly rumored trade that the Spurs appear to be considering is a move for All-NBA point guard De'Aaron Fox of the Sacramento Kings.
The idea of pairing Fox with Wembanyama is undeniably intriguing. A 39-year-old Chris Paul has Wembanyama and the Spurs nearly playing at a .500 level, which seemingly implies that a star in their prime could get the franchise over the hump and into the playoffs.
Following the Spurs' 144-118 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on Jan. 31, Wembanyama spoke candidly about the trade deadline and expressed his trust in the front office.

Wembanyama was also inevitably asked for his thoughts on Fox as a player and potential teammate, to which he offered praise and doubled down on his trust in the organization.

The Spurs have every reason to be aggressive ahead of the 2025 NBA trade deadline, and it appears as though Wembanyama is staying the course with his patient trust in the organization.
Victor Wembanyama on De'Aaron Fox rumors: "I trust our front office"
Fox is perhaps the most captivating talent available on the open market in 2025. Some might argue in favor of Jimmy Butler, but he's 35 with a 2025-26 player option he could decline, while Fox is 27 with another guaranteed season remaining on his deal.
Beyond the contracts, Fox is one of the most dynamic talents in the NBA, thriving in the fourth quarter and posting elite averages across an impressive sample size of seasons.
Since 2020-21, Fox has accumulated averages of 25.1 points, 6.1 assists, 4.2 rebounds, 1.5 steals, and 1.9 three-point field goals made on .480/.334/.758 shooting. Thus far in 2024-25, Fox is proving how much of a metronome he really is by matching those numbers in an almost identical manner.
Through 44 appearances, the former All-Star is averaging 25.1 points, 6.2 assists, 5.0 rebounds, 1.5 steals, and 2.0 three-point field goals made.
For perspective: Fox's current averages would place him at No. 1 on the Spurs in scoring and steals, No. 2 in assists, No. 3 in rebounding, and No. 4 in three-point field goals made. That alone offers reason for intrigue, as the Spurs would be adding the epitome of an impact player.
It's also worth noting Fox has ranked in the top 10 among qualified players in points per fourth quarter in each of the past five seasons.
That may be the most crucial information of all, as the Spurs currently rank No. 24 in net rating during the fourth quarter. They're being outscored by 4.2 points per 100 possessions and desperately need a player who can put the team on their back during the closing minutes of a game.
Perhaps the opportunity cost will force the Spurs to follow a different path at the trade deadline, but Wembanyama trusts the front office and Fox is undoubtedly appealing.
