Victor Wembanyama's biggest issue rears its ugly head in loss to Suns

Things are going to get difficult for Victor Wembanyama, especially if he keeps turning the ball over.

Well, it was bound to happen eventually. The Spurs have finally lost a basketball game, and it came at a surprising time. While the Spurs were never going to go 82-0, this was not the game we anticipated losing. Falling 130-118 to the Phoenix Suns, this was a damaging blow.

The final box score doesn't illustrate how brutal a loss this truly was. Ultimately losing by only 12 points, the brutality was far worse. At its apex, the Spurs would go down by a whopping 31 points, and their largest lead of the night was only by two points early in the first quarter. This was outright dominance by the Suns.

The Suns put on a three point shooting masterclass

To the Spurs' credit, the Suns put together one of, if not the most impressive, three-point shooting displays of any team so far in the new season. No matter how poorly the Spurs might have played, it would have been impossible for any team to cool down the Suns on Sunday night.

The barrage started from the beginning. The Suns piled on 11 three-pointers in the first half alone and finished off the match with 19. Notably, this number resulted from a striking 33 attempts. Had they taken more shots, they could have very well broken the single-game three-point record.

While the Suns were red hot, the Spurs were certainly making it easy for them. The team got open look after open look, as the Silver and Black looked exhausted and lazy. It's hard to tell if the team was getting too confident or was drained from 5 straight wins; regardless, it was not a great effort.

Victor Wembanyama was met with a new hurdle to conquer

Unlike ever before, Victor Wembanyama was seeing double teams and triple teams everywhere. The Suns didn't allow the big man an inch of room, making it extremely difficult for him all night long. This put immense pressure on the Frenchman to make the right pass and additional pressure on the shooters to make their shots. The result? Neither of these things happened.

Wembanyama suffered his highest turnover game of the year, amounting to a disappointing six turnovers. To go along with that, the superstar tallied only 14 points, shooting 4/14 from the field. It was evident that the pressure was getting to him, and he didn't know what to do with it.

Based on Wembanyama's dominant performance so far this season, this new tactic may become a trend in the future. While the addition of De'Aaron Fox may help alleviate the pressure on the big man, teams will continue to help off the San Antonio shooters who can't seem to knock down their shots.

To make matters worse, following an epic start to the game, Dylan Harper left the game and would not return with an ankle injury. We can only hope that the blossoming star is okay.

Wembanyama and the Spurs will have to get back in the drawing room and clean up their mistakes from the night. It is important to remember that this team is still young, and games like this were bound to happen. On the bright side, rookie Carter Bryant got some burn and looked great. And of course, the Spurs likely won't see a team as hot as the Suns were for a while.
