Ever since the San Antonio Spurs lost to the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals, De’Aaron Fox’s name has been getting lambasted in the media. He struggled mightily in the Finals (and throughout the playoffs, partially due to an injury), and people were very quick to deem his contract the worst in the NBA. Now, Dylan Harper has a chance to learn from Fox for Victor Wembanyama’s sake.
Fox’s shot-making was brutal in the Finals. He had the ball in his hands too often, based on the way things were going in the games. And it didn’t feel like there was enough offensive creativity from him, Wembanyama, and the rest of the Spurs’ lineup. That’s where Harper needs to learn.
He needs to learn so he and Wemby can keep on winning.
Dylan Harper can learn from De'Aaron Fox to help Victor Wembanyama
First and foremost, a lot of the dialogue around Fox has gotten way out of hand. He had a rough Finals, and the contract isn’t ideal, but Fox’s playmaking and ball-handling duties are still very important.
However, as the Spurs continue to move forward, Harper is slowly going to take on more and more duties as the Spurs’ primary ball-handler and offensive creator.
So, as that happens, he should take this opportunity to learn from some of the things that went wrong for Fox during the Finals (and throughout the playoffs in general).
At the end of the day, the biggest thing that went wrong for Fox was a lack of shot-making. He got to a decent number of good spots on the floor, but he just didn’t convert.
And when he wasn’t converting, he was still taking shots. When, in hindsight, he probably should have given up some of his on-ball duties to Harper and other Spurs players.
Perhaps that’s something Harper can take. He doesn’t always have to have the ball. On a team with as much talent as the Spurs, no one player always has to have the ball.
And a lot of the time, unlike Fox’s ball-dominant closes to games, the ball should probably find the hands of the best player. So, Harper should work to find ways of getting Wemby involved in spots that work better for him.
Instead of having Wemby work from the perimeter, run more pick-and-roll. Get him on the block more often. Find more creative ways of creating pressure to take pressure off Wemby.
Harper can definitely learn from the current Fox drama.
