Victor Wembanyama's best friend is already on the roster but can he stay there?

It's up to Jeremy Sochan to keep himself on the team.

One thing we haven't discussed much in the Jeremy Sochan era is his chemistry with Victor Wembanyama. While people are quick to claim that the San Antonio Spurs should move on from the former Baylor Bear due to a lacking offensive game, it would come at a cost in more ways than one. He and Wemby work well on the court together in some of the most unique ways.

There are more than a few examples of this. We've seen Sochan throw alley-oops to Vic like the one above, but we've also seen the vice-versa version of this. Wemby is a good and willing passer. He's found Jeremy for the oops and just cutting to the basket at the perfect time as defenders play off of him, and the Alien gets double-teamed.

Wemby and Sochan can still grow together

The Polish Prince is one of the better cutters in the league. It's just not enough to build his offense around. Now, I'm not saying that San Antonio's offense as a whole was better with the two on the floor together. It wasn't. Harrison Barnes was a better option for that.

When checking the advanced stats among two-man lineups with a minimum of 400 minutes played, Barnes and Wembanyama posted a 114.2 offensive rating and a 108.7 defensive rating. In contrast, Vic and Sochan had a 110.6 offensive rating and a 107.1 defensive rating.

Defensively, it's the best rating of any two-man pairing on the team. Offensively, there's much to be desired, and that's why Jeremy was put on the bench. He's been working hard on changing his impact on offense. You have to put the ball in the basket. The goal is still to score more points than your opponent at the end of the game. Doesn't matter if your defense is great if you can't score either.

You'd make the argument that HB's defensive number isn't that far behind Sochan, but that's when you have to step back from the numbers and use your eyes. Keldon Johnson and Wemby also have a strong defensive rating as a duo. That's really just the Wembanyama effect. We all know that KJ isn't a great defender, even though he did try harder last season.

The colorfully haired forward is clearly the second-best defender on the team. We don't want to lose that. He's the one who draws the toughest assignments on a nightly basis. As awesome as Stephon Castle is on defense, he doesn't have the size and length Jeremy does.

Keeping him should be a priority for the defense, but he also has a knack for working well off Wemby. He just needs to improve his shooting, and I promise you, you'll see another level of this offense unlocked.
