The trade market is in all-time slide.

If you haven't heard the news, the first trade of the NBA season has officially happened, and no, the Spurs weren't involved. Instead, the Washington Wizards will be receiving Trae Young in exchange for CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert, according to Shams Charania. In the blink of an eye, the Hawks' once-seen franchise player is now headed to Washington for the price of ultimately nothing.

How does this relate to the Spurs, you ask? Well, San Antonio has a point guard in the same statistical stratosphere as Young, who Silver and Black fans once wanted gone after just a half-season. Yes, we didn't forget about all of that. Because of the insertion of Dylan Harper in the 2025 NBA Draft, many fans thought that De'Aaron would be on his way out quicker than we would have thought.

While it wouldn't happen now, it may be inevitable once the rookie reaches his true potential as a superstar. In reality, it makes sense. How could the Spurs hold onto three star-level point guards? However, we are quickly learning that trading Fox won't be so easy.

Trae Young proves that the point guard market is ruined

On paper, the Trae Young deal looks like the biggest fleece we have ever seen. However, when you look around the NBA and the front offices struggling with apron rules, you can rationalize it. There wasn't a single other team that could viably trade for the struggling guard without dismantling their core.

Furthermore, most teams are pretty set at the point guard position. The majority of contenders have their guy solidified, and the tanking teams have a player they believe can be their long-term answer. At the end of the day, the Wizards were one of the only squads that made sense to bring in a max-contract point guard.

The Spurs will struggle to find a future home for De'Aaron Fox

I am not coming here to say that the Spurs need to trade De'Aaron or should, for that matter. But there is a world where, in a couple of years, Dylan Harper is begging to be this team's starting point guard. In turn, San Antonio would be looking to trade the then-30-year-old who is on a max contract.

If this becomes reality, the Spurs may seriously struggle to deal the veteran. Don't expect any future De'Aaron Fox trade to amount to anything. He is either staying for the long run, likely taking on a different role, or will be traded away for a bag of chips and a soda.

It's a sad world we live in that All-Star-level point guards can't find any suitors; you can thank the CBA for that. Still, don't fret. This is a problem that we won't have to deal with for several years, but it is something to keep in mind following the Trae Young blockbuster.
