When it comes to next NBA season, the San Antonio Spurs will ideally be in a position to contend for a playoff spot in the Western Conference. The current season was clearly set up to be a stepping stone type year, and next season may be the year they can finally take a step up and be among the ranks of the true contending teams in the West.
But if for some reason they are not, it would not be the worst situation in the world for San Antonio. There are multiple prospects worth looking out for in the 2026 draft, perhaps the most notable of which being 6-foot-9 wing A.J. Dybantsa. Currently playing for Utah Prep in Hurricane, Utah, Dybantsa officially committed to BYU last month.
What will be of much greater interest to Spurs fans is the fact that Dybantsa has made it clear he would be thrilled to be drafted by San Antonio next year. Attending the NBA's Global Games in Paris this past week, the talented prospect spoke with ESPN to reveal his wishes.
"I think Victor (Wembanyama) is just ridiculous; the things he does are just crazy," Dybantsa said. "I just think we would've been a crazy duo. Now the odds of that happening are very slim. But I mean, it was just a thought that came up in my mind when he got drafted. But you never know."
Dybantsa wants to play alongside Wembanyama
Like Dybantsa says, the odds he actually ends up on the Spurs' roster is probably a little far-fetched. But to be fair, so was Victor Wembanyama ending up in San Antonio. And at the very least, it is intriguing to watch such a highly-touted prospect like Dybantsa say so early on in the process that he wants to become a Spur.
It obviously makes sense at some level. Wemby is such a must-see TV type talent that of course the high school kids are taking notice and speaking highly of him. But seeing the Spurs become the preferred destination of top prospects like this is still a little shocking.
As for how good of a fit he would be in San Antonio, Dybantsa would fit in wonderfully in the team's frontcourt. He possesses top-tier athleticism and has a very polished game overall, being able to score efficiently from all three levels and doing it with elite ball-handling skills. Spurs fans will no doubt be keeping an eye on him from here on out.
