In the highly anticipated season opener against the Mavericks, Victor Wembanyama’s debut was a bit of a reality check. The French phenom shot a rough 5-of-18 from the field and just 1-of-8 from beyond the arc, struggling to find his rhythm.

The excitement was still there, of course, but after last season’s shooting woes, Spurs fans couldn’t help but feel a twinge of concern, hoping the young core would deliver in that area.

Wemby himself was transparent about his conditioning not being up to par, acknowledging that his debut wasn’t up to his standards. But in true Wemby fashion, he confidently told reporters that his conditioning would improve quickly—"one or two games," he promised.

Fast forward to tonight's home opener against the Rockets, and it’s safe to say Wembanyama is proving he’s a man of his word. In just the first five minutes of the game, he seemed like a completely different player, knocking down his first two threes with relative ease, one from nearly the parking lot.

Wembanyama continues to rise to the occasion

His quick adjustments and decisiveness on the floor showed he was serious about bouncing back fast, and he wasted no time making his presence felt on both ends.

Wemby didn’t stop at shooting, though. He brought the physicality Spurs fans were dying to see, especially inside the paint. He denied Alperen Sengun with a tough block and collected three rebounds, setting the tone that he’s not here to be pushed around.

He looked more aggressive, more confident, and, importantly, more comfortable within San Antonio’s system, adding a couple of blocks, ten points, three rebounds, and an assist in just his first few minutes on the court. It’s the kind of turnaround that should make fans breathe a little easier.

While newcomers like Chris Paul and Harrison Barnes will undoubtedly bring stability and shooting prowess, the responsibility still lies with the Spurs' core players to show growth. Wemby’s quick improvements tonight highlight his commitment to driving that growth.

Yes, it’s only game two, but the way he’s risen to the occasion after a shaky start shows that he’s ready to make the adjustments needed to help his team succeed.

Spurs fans got exactly what they wanted to see—a glimpse of Wembanyama shaking off the cobwebs, finding his stride, and reminding everyone why he was the most anticipated rookie since LeBron James. He’s clearly a man of his word, and if he can keep up this level of play, it’s going to be a thrilling season in San Antonio.
