This NBA trend is pushing Spurs' championship hopes closer to reality

Last season might've not ended the way the San Antonio Spurs had hoped, but they could win a championship next year if one NBA trend continues. With the New York Knicks winning the 2026 NBA Finals, the league now has had eight straight seasons with different champions.

No repeats means that next season could very well be the Spurs' year. Perhaps the biggest reason why there has been increased parity has been the controversial collective bargaining agreement. It may have increased parity, though it has resulted in making great teams worse.

The Spurs are the exception to the rule, with them having three of their four best players on rookie-scale contracts and still far enough under the second apron to improve their roster. In fact, they've already addressed key flaws, namely a lack of power forward and center depth.

The Spurs will win a championship if this trend continues

Of course, San Antonio won't have it easy as they look to win their first championship in more than a decade. The Oklahoma City Thunder, despite having to shed salary this offseason, still loom as a major threat in the Western Conference.

Then there is the Philadelphia 76ers. They added stars Jalen Brown and LeBron James to a core that already included Tyrese Maxey, Joel Embiid, and V.J. Edgecombe.

At the very least, they will make the Knicks' path to the NBA Finals much tougher. The East being tougher would seemingly make a Knicks repeat less likely.

Increased parity could be the Spurs' ticket to another title

If the NBA's newfound parity leads to another new NBA champion this season, San Antonio's title hopes improve dramatically. They already have the best player in the NBA in Victor Wembanyama.

Not only that, but they also have an All-Star in De'Aaron Fox and two rising stars in Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper. If Wembanyama, Castle, and Harper continue to develop rapidly and Fox bounces back, then the Spurs could very well be the championship favorites.

It won't be a cake walk back to the NBA Finals, but recent history suggests that next season could be the Spurs' year to win it all.
