The Spurs would never slump again with a weekly Kings game added to their schedule

Someone call Adam Silver.

I would like to file a motion for the Spurs to play against Sacramento once a week. The Silver and Black led 80-54 at the break Tuesday night at the Frost Bank Center, shooting 30-of-50 from the field and 13-of-22 from three, with 23 assists to four turnovers. The Kings walked into San Antonio 0-3 with a 119.6 defensive rating (27th) and a 105.8 offensive rating (25th).

So yes, grain of salt. A big one. It's the Kings. But 80 points in a half is 80 points in a half, and if it were that easy, everyone would do it.

The Spurs needed a get-right game and the Kings volunteered

Wemby had 23 on 11-of-18 with nine boards in under 16 minutes to start the contest. He finished with 29 on 14-of-21. That's a nice thing to type up after watching his offense stumble through the first three games of the season.

Even in the Mavericks game where he finished 9-for-18 from the floor, he started 2-for-5 and didn't get going until midway through the second quarter. Tuesday, he just dunked whenever the mood struck.

Julian Champagnie came one three shy of breaking his record for threes in a half with eight. Eight threes in a half matches what he did against the Knicks last New Year's Eve. He posted 24 points in 13 minutes between the first two quarters of the game.

The 80 isn't just a big, round number, carrying no meaning. The franchise record for points in a first half is 87, set back in 2021 when the Spurs put up 87 before halftime against the Bucks. SA got within seven of that against a team that had no business being on the floor with them, and we'll take it every time.

Two guards on the floor still looks great for the Spurs

If we can take anything from this game, it's this. The defense started slowly. The Kings, for some reason, kept pace with San Antonio in the first quarter enough to take a one-point lead, 22-23. Mitch was not happy. He yelled at Carter Bryant for a missed assignment and called timeouts to get on his guys. All in all, things improved once he put two guards and two floor spacers on the court with Vic.

Devin Vassell dropped 4-of-7 threes. De'Aaron Fox went 2-for-2 from outside. Stephon Castle started slow from the floor but got in on the action in the second half and finished 3-for-8 to maintain his 37.5%. The Silver and Black just did whatever they wanted to Sacramento. It was rude from the perspective of a Kings fan, but glorious in the eyes of Spurs Nation.

San Antonio won't learn much about themselves in this one. It wasn't a very competitive setting. The 130-103 final score paints that picture. They did what they were supposed to do when a contender plays a horrendous team. But the fellas looked like they had a great time together, building the chemistry and the good vibes necessary for another strong run, and I'm all for that.

Now, if only we could play against Sacramento every 5-7 days.
