The San Antonio Spurs haven't gotten off to the most explosive start of the season as they're still adjusting to new lineups and rotations. But despite those lingering question marks, they've been solid on both sides of the floor, ranking in the top 10 in offensive and defensive rating.
Now, numbers don't mean everything. This team still has a long way to go, but it's encouraging to know that the Spurs are already among the NBA's best two-way groups. If what we're currently getting is the worst version of them, then the rest of the league should be extremely worried.
The Spurs are finding their groove on offense
If you haven't been living under a rock, then you should be pretty aware of the endless chatter about the Spurs' offense. All summer long, there were conversations about whether Dylan Harper would crack the starting lineup and what that would mean for De'Aaron Fox. Mitch Johnson elected to play the two next to each other, and it's been a bit of a process to make it work.
But despite its imperfections, this squad is still getting things done. Victor Wembanyama has been dominant over his last two games, averaging 32.5 points. Stephon Castle and Fox are a surprisingly good shooting duo, both efficiently knocking down their long-distance attempts.
The Spurs are also doing a great job controlling the basketball, averaging the fewest turnovers per game in the NBA. That's an impressive feat considering how many players are adjusting to the new rhythm of this team's offense.
While they're still working to perfect their half-court production, this squad is capitalizing on transition opportunities, ranking second in the percentage of points that come from the fast break. This is such a luxury: despite them not being anywhere close to their offensive ceiling, the Spurs are still finding ways to be effective on that side of the floor.
This team is still competing on defense
The Spurs have also been good on the defensive side of the floor. Wembanyama has been his usual shot-blocking self, averaging a league-best 3.8 rejections per game. It's safe to say he's already making a strong early case for his second straight DPOY award.
This squad can do a better job at setting a strong defensive tone early in games, but they know how to turn up the intensity as each quarter goes by. That was apparent in their matchup against the Dallas Mavericks, where they shut them down late in the second half to pull off their first win of the season.
The sky is the limit for this group. They still have plenty of wrinkles to iron out, but that hasn't kept them from coming out of the gate with a reliable two-way attack. As they continue to mesh, the Spurs are putting themselves into position to dominate the league just as they did last season.
