The Spurs must answer the Cooper Flagg call coming from inside the state for years to come

Keep your eyes peeled.

The Spurs have a growing issue to deal with... like a wart. Cooper Flagg is making noise in Dallas, and San Antonio must be taking notice. After knocking off the Houston Rockets, the Mavericks are 4-2. Their franchise star is averaging 25.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 6.8 assists, 2.8 steals, and 1.3 blocks per game. He's 19 years old, people.

It would be one thing if this were just a player hoisting shots on a bad team, but this might be a sneaky good team when everyone is healthy. They were supposed to struggle to find their footing after Nico Harrison traded Luka Doncic away, but it's only been a couple of years, and the light at the end of their tunnel looks brighter than the Texas sun in mid-July.

The Spurs have another emerging contender to deal with

Nobody can predict the NBA's future. You have expectations for one guy, and he either gets hurt or doesn't live up. Or even worse, the organizeation lets him down, not allowing him to reach his peak Maybe his development didn't go how it should have or maybe the franchise couldn't put the right players around him. There are several reasons a high-potential prospect doesn't live up to the hype.

The Spurs can't and won't get caught slacking on what's being built in North Texas. Flagg gave the Silver and Black a hint of what he was capable of in their last meeting of the 2025-26 season, when he put up 33 points on 52% FG and 42.9% 3PT, with 33 points, six rebounds, and five assists filling out the box score.

San Antonio won that game by 19 points, but it wasn't Coop's fault. The Mavericks just didn't have enough to keep up with the soon-to-be Western Conference Champs, but it's a new season, and the future doesn't hold for anyone. Just ask OKC.

The Thunder were supposed to be the next great dynasty until the Spurs came along and knocked them off in the Western Conference Finals. You could say that their loss of Jalen Williams had something to do with that, but that's how quickly your fortune can change in the NBA. There are no guarantees, and injuries are a part of the gig. If you can avoid them, you've bucked the trend.

San Antonio has the ball now. They've been chosen as the next ring leader of the NBA, but that's not only up to them. Plenty must go right for them to fulfill the Wembanyama prophecy—one of the greatest ever—but the Mavericks have a young star talented enough to make life difficult if they put the right pieces around him.

Let's hope they do. The competition should only make Wemby and the Spurs better. It will also give us fireworks four times a year. Who doesn't love fireworks?
