The Spurs are ready to flip the script on the Denver Nuggets

The NBA is set to release the official schedule for the 2026-27 season, and there are a handful of matchups that Spurs fans should be ready to circle on their calendar. But one of the biggest opponents San Antonio should watch out for is the Denver Nuggets.

These teams played four times during the most recent campaign, with Denver winning the season series 3-1. Several pundits anticipated a second-round battle between them in the playoffs, but a disappointing first-round loss to the Timberwolves kept the Nuggets from advancing to that stage.

But next season will be different. Denver will be healthier, and the Spurs have even more depth. This could very well turn into another red-hot Western Conference rivalry.

We need to see more of Victor Wembanyama vs. Nikola Jokic

If there's one player who's had the upper hand on Victor Wembanyama over the years, it's Nikola Jokic. The three-time MVP faced off against Wemby seven times in his career, holding a 5-2 record over him.

He's done an amazing job individually against Victor, averaging 37.3 points, 9.1 assists, and 10.9 rebounds. Now, Wemby's also held his own in those matchups, averaging 26.4 points, 15.1 rebounds, and 4.1 blocks. So he's done more than enough to prove he's a formidable opponent for The Joker.

But they only played against each other once in the 2025-26 campaign, so Jokic has only gotten a small dose of the new, polished version of Wembanyama. Expect their matchups to be blockbuster events next season.

Nikola will be hungry to prove that even the league's most dominant defender can't stop him, and Victor will look to solidify his spot as the NBA's best center. You couldn't ask for a better dynamic than that.

The Spurs are well-equipped to deal with the Nuggets next season

There were a handful of things that kept San Antonio from having the upper hand on Denver last season, but the most glaring was Victor Wembanyama's absence. It's tough to win games against elite teams when a player of his caliber isn't on the floor.

If that's not an issue next season, the Spurs are built to own their matchups against the Nuggets. They're deeper than Denver at a handful of positions, and their defensive upside is much higher.

They have more than enough bodies to throw at Nikola Jokic, and players like Devin Vassell, Carter Bryant, and Stephon Castle are viable options to slow down Jamal Murray. Additionally, Wemby will be even sharper on offense, and right now it doesn't seem like Denver has any answers for him on defense.

The Spurs have already had their way against some of the best teams in the West, but next season it's time for them to flip the script on the Denver Nuggets.
