The Spurs are coming off one of their best seasons in franchise history, but the 2025-26 campaign was just the launching point. Winning 62 games was great, but San Antonio can do better. Let's call it 70 games minimum. I know, I know. That's a lofty number, but reasonable signs are pointing to an incoming breakout.

The Spurs got an ideal schedule for a 70-win run

Before we get to the play on the floor, we should acknowledge the benefits the league gave the Silver and Black with the schedule.

After a long run through the playoffs, fatigue might be a concern for some teams. Not only are the Spurs young enough to withstand it, but the NBA also only gave them 13 back-to-backs and stocked their calendar with a bunch of rest days.

And I'm less concerned with their energy levels than I am with the possibility that the Spurs rest players when too many games are stacked together.

We all know how much the league loves its infamous four-games-in-six-night stretches. San Antonio has always looked at the big picture, and if they believe giving guys time off is necessary, they won't hesitate to sit them out.

Winning 70 games will depend on the best players being available as much as possible. It's a long season, so it's unlikely everyone makes it through completely unscathed, but if there are no major injuries, there's no reason to believe they won't steamroll the competition.

The Spurs can get even better on both ends

The Spurs had the third-highest defensive rating in the NBA last season. Mitch Johnson will have to prove that he can keep the defense humming without his ex-assistant coach, Sean Sweeney, but if he can, it should continue to get better.

Building a great defense requires several things: players with good measurables who play with a high IQ and are willing to give maximum effort are a few of them. But none are more important than chemistry.

San Antonio played on a string much of the time last year, but taking another step on that side could make them legendary, and there's certainly room to improve.

The same can be said about the offensive side of the floor. This team finished the season in the top 3 in offensive rating, but they were first when you narrow the scope to the final two months, starting from February 1.

It was encouraging to watch them grow so much during the year and, frankly, scary because they're still so raw.

San Antonio hasn't even reached its ceiling yet

The core guys are just still so young and figuring out how to really play professional basketball. They're ahead of the curve, but there's still a lot to learn; guys still have to grow into their adult bodies and get that infamous "man strength" you only get through experience.

The key to all of this will be their continued selflessness. The Spurs don't need anyone to suddenly become a 30-point-per-game scorer or take over the offense. They just need everyone to keep making the right play, trusting the next guy, and accepting whatever role gives the team the best chance to win.

Doing so makes 70 wins possible. This team already proved they could win 62 games before this group had fully matured. Now they have another year of experience, more depth, more size, a healthier offseason, and a better understanding of what it takes to win at the highest level.

Yeah, maybe they fall short. 70 wins is an absurd number. But that's what makes the prediction fun. The crazy part is acknowledging that the Spurs have actually reached a point where this doesn't seem outrageous.

Last season was merely the breakthrough; this season could be the beginning of something completely ridiculous.
