The five teams most likely to crush the Spurs' title dreams next NBA season

The Spurs are obviously in the contender conversation, but there have been some changes throughout the offseason in the Association. Some title threats from last season will carry over, but there will also be new ones.

Star power has changed hands, depth has fluctuated, and championship pedigrees are all out there as obstacles to San Antonio's Race for Seis. So, let's take a moment to explore who the Silver and Black's most threatening foes may be in 2026-27.

5. Denver Nuggets

The Nuggets haven't made many significant additions over the offseason, but they don't need to. Nikola Jokic is one of the smartest offensive players we've ever seen. Denver suffered an injury to one of their most important players last season: Aaron Gordon. If he's healthy, their last postseason run doesn't end in the first round. You have to respect a Joker-led team, so we'll do that on this list.

4. Miami Heat

Giannis Antetokounmpo and Erik Spoelstra. This is where they get their respect. Giannis has been in purgatory with a Milwaukee team that couldn't put the right pieces around him, but he's still one of the greatest players ever. Coach Spo has a reputation for overachieving with less talent. He's still one of the best coaches in the game. Giving him Giannis to pair with Bam can't be underestimated.

3. Philadelphia 76ers

LeBron James/Joel Embiid/Jaylen Brown/Tyrese Maxey. This is an undeniably talented group. Bron is old, and Embiid has bad knees. Those things have to be accounted for. Playing the "they'll be injured" game isn't fun, though. If they're healthy, it will be one of the strongest groups to deal with. They have too much star power to ignore. Chemistry will be their main concern, but these are pros. They'll be more than fine.

2. New York Knicks

These guys have already beaten the Spurs, and there's a potential mental advantage gained from the experience that can't be dismissed. Mike Brown's Knicks are battle-tested, and Jalen Brunson is one of the NBA's biggest playoff risers. They're physical, they play together, and there's an undying belief they can win any game. That's a dangerous combination.

1. Oklahoma City Thunder

Knicks fans will hate that they aren't first, but that only makes me enjoy this more. The truth can be hurtful sometimes, and if we're being honest, OKC was San Antonio's toughest opponent during their recent playoff run. Jalen Williams will probably be back and healthy next season. They have a winning culture, a deep team, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is never one to be taken lightly. Revenge will be on their minds.

The encouraging part is knowing that none of the aforementioned parties are unbeatable. That's incredible growth for the Spurs, considering where they were a year ago. If they continue to develop their core and Wembanyama keeps evolving into the ultimate cheat code, the Spurs should end up on top of these teams, creating a significant gap between them.
