Stephon Castle send thunderous statement to cynics of his offensive role

For those who questioned Stephon Castle's ability as a lead playmaker for the Spurs, it's time to lay your concerns to rest. He posted eight assists in San Antonio's historic Game 4 comeback victory, which was his highest total of the series so far.

Castle was strong in so many areas today. His three-ball was falling at an efficient clip (3-6 from downtown), and it was as solid an overall scoring performance, but the passing chops he demonstrated were a key part of the Spurs' strong fourth-quarter stretch to close the game.

Stephon Castle's game is translating at an elite level

There's nothing worse than when a player showcases an amazing attribute through the regular season but does not translate it over to the postseason stage. Luckily, that's not a concern for Stephon.

Mitch Johnson gave him the keys to the Spurs' offense in the regular season, and he was amazing as an orchestrator. He posted a team-high 7.4 assists per game, 502 total assists, and a handful of jaw-dropping triple-doubles.

The challenges of the NBA playoffs haven't disrupted Castle's ability to create easy opportunities for his teammates. For example, Victor Wembanyama wasn't dominating one-on-one matchups tonight and also struggled from distance. But a handful of great feeds from Stephon set him up for easy looks at the basket to put this game away in the fourth quarter.

Castle's poise in Game 4 was very impressive

It's impressive to see a player make key improvements in the midst of a tough playoff series, especially the first of their career. Stephon did just that. While he was dominant in Friday's win in Portland, he did turn the ball over four times, marking a major adjustment he needed to make moving forward in the series

He responded in Game 4 with just one turnover, adapting to a Blazers defense that loves to pressure ball handlers on the perimeter. His patience and maturity were on full display, never seeming rattled or rushed on offense. There's a reason why he was a +17 on the floor in this matchup.

The level of poise that he showed off is more evidence of his future as an elite lead guard. It's the type of skill that so many teams across the league look to invest in to get closer to contender status. With Castle, the Spurs aren't going to have to worry about that for a while.
