The San Antonio Spurs finally got their first win of the season against the Dallas Mavericks, beating them 122-106 at American Airlines Center. Stephon Castle was great in the victory with his impressive offensive versatility, which is exactly what this team needed tonight and will continue to need as the season progresses.
The third-year guard scored 19 points and connected on three of his eight long-distance attempts while dishing out eight assists. He was also +12 in his minutes, his best mark of the Spurs' first three games.
Stephon Castle was great both on and off the ball
Tonight, Castle did a bit of everything for the Spurs' offense. When the ball was in his hands, he found success driving into the paint to make plays, finishing at the rim himself or dishing off the ball to teammates. We saw that in the first half, where he did an amazing job breaking down the Mavericks' zone defense with his dribble penetration to create those scoring opportunities.
He also busted that zone when the ball wasn't in his hands. There were several possessions when he flashed to the middle of the floor and made himself available for easy shots near the rim and kick-out or interior passes. He consistently found the weak spots in Dusty May's defense and used his unique skill set as a passer and scorer to help put points on the board.
Castle was even effective when he was further away from the basket. For the second straight game, he drained three long-range shots, and tonight, each of his makes came off the catch. The shot chart looked great, as he attempted them from several different areas on the floor. His impressive shooting from downtown continues to be a great early-season trend for the Spurs.
That versatility is exactly what the Spurs' offense needs
If the Spurs want to get the best out of their new starting lineup, Castle needs to be the glue that brings everything together. They'll need him to wear several hats, whether he's initiating the offense, setting screens, cutting, acting as a secondary playmaker, or making his threes off the catch and off the dribble.
That sounds like a lot, but he's one of the most flexible players on this roster, and he's proven to be capable of doing those things every night. Every team needs a Swiss Army Knife, and that's exactly what Castle is.
He has such a unique ability to blend into so many different roles, and that versatility will help this team continue to find its footing atop the Western Conference.
