The 2026 NBA Draft is still four months away, but San Antonio Spurs fans are likely already keeping an eye on mock drafts. This team may not have many holes, but they could still use a lottery pick to improve their roster.
However, a recent mock draft by NBADraft.net would see them potentially waste the pick. They have the Silver and Black selecting guard, Darius Acuff. Acuff is a 6'3" offensive guard who is a talented high-volume scorer, though not an explosive athlete. I'm sure Acuff will be a solid player in the NBA, but he doesn't fill a glaring team need.
The opposite, in fact. San Antonio already has De'Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle, and Dylan Harper. That makes the thought of the team taking a guard in the lottery of this year's draft seem far-fetched.
This is especially true given their current need for a power forward. Luckily, there are three or four power forward options projected to go in the 10-15 range. That should give San Antonio plenty of options if they are looking toward the draft to fill that need.
The Spurs must solve their depth issue at power forward
When it comes to drafting in the lottery, teams should take the best player available regardless of position. That is all well and good, but the Spurs probably won't be selecting in the top 10.
Instead, San Antonio is likely to end up with a late lottery pick, perhaps the 12th selection courtesy of the Atlanta Hawks. At that point in the draft, San Antonio should take position into account, particularly with them needing more depth at power forward.
It's true that they could use their mid-level exception to acquire a four in free agency. Nevertheless, they should look to address that need in the draft. Their current rotation of Julian Champagne, Harrison Barnes, and Carter Bryant is solid if unspectacular.
However, Barnes may not return next season, and Bryant may not be ready to play a major role. Hopefully Bryant will be, but the Spurs would still need depth at that position.
The Spurs have a clear draft option at power forward
One potential draft target could be Yaxel Lendeborg. Lendeborg is a do-it-all power forward who can shoot, defend, and pass, though his age may keep him from being a top-10 pick. He'll be 24 years old by the time his rookie season starts, and that might turn off several rebuilding teams.
Ironically, teams such as the Oklahoma City Thunder and Spurs could have lottery picks. Both teams would probably love to add a ready-made power forward who could be a rotation player on day one.
All told, the Spurs have better options than Acuff, even if they don't pick Lendeborg. Particularly with them already having Fox, Castle, and Harper at guard.
