Spurs vindicated for questionable Dylan Harper move that looks genius now

They made the right call.

The NBA draft has been key to the San Antonio Spurs' dramatic turnaround. After selecting in the top four in each of the last three drafts, they have Victor Wembanyama, Stephon Castle, and Dylan Harper to show for it.

Those three players have been key to San Antonio's dominance this season and could very well be the key to them winning multiple championships.

Harper is crucial to their future plans, but what if the Spurs had a chance to go back and redo the 2025 NBA Draft? Knowing what they already know, would they still select him?

The latest 2025 NBA re-draft attempts to answer just that. After all, as great as Harper has been this season, Charlotte Hornets forward Kon Knueppel has been even better. As a result, Knueppel was picked to go to the Spurs in a hypothetical redraft.

Would the Spurs pick Dylan Harper again in a 2025 redraft?

Ironically, many Spurs fans expected them to draft Knueppel before they ended up with the second pick. They obviously went with Harper, but no one expected Knueppel to have a historic rookie season, and his fit on this Spurs team would have been scary.

However, I believe the Spurs ultimately made the right call selecting Harper and would do so again if given the chance. Even with De'Aaron Fox and Castle already on the team, having a third guard of Harper's caliber is a luxury that no other NBA team can say they have.

Kneuppel's elite shooting might be even better in San Antonio while playing with Wembanyama. That being said, Harper has all-NBA potential, whereas Knueppel could just be a multi-time all-star. It's a small distinction but an important one. Harper simply has a higher ceiling.

Dylan Harper's ceiling is still higher than Kon Knueppel's

How many 6'5" playmakers can create for others and finish at the rim, as well as defend? You can count those players on one hand. Even his biggest weakness is steadily becoming a strength.

Since February 1st, he's drilling 43.1% of his 2.8 3-point attempts per game. His numbers don't stand out as much as Knueppel since he's only averaging 22.3 minutes, but per 36 minutes, he's averaging 18.6 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 6.2 assists.

That proves he's already a great young prospect, and playing a key role on a contender could further aid his ascent to stardom. Therefore, if the Spurs got a chance to do a 2025 redraft, they would be completely justified in picking Harper all over again.
