As Chris Paul approaches the end of his 20th season with his 40th birthday almost one month from today, questions have been swirling about his future. Paul is a respected player across the league and if he decides to come back for another season, there will be plenty of suitors for his services. Veteran point guards who can take care of the ball and still put up numbers are very useful for a league that's gotten so young, so fast.
As it stands now, it sounds like the Point God will be coming back for season 21. In an article written by Marc J. Spears of Andscape, Paul revealed his latest thoughts regarding the subject.
"I’ll be 40 in May. So, yeah man, I’m going to keep playing, I think... At the end of every season, I evaluate everything...But the more years that go by, it’s more conversations with my family, with my kids. They have a lot of say so. They got a lot of input."
Paul's return would be great news for the Spurs
Recently, there has been speculation that Paul would head into coaching after he finishes playing, and that could still be the case, but that plan may be delayed if doesn't change his mind. CP3 should only be emboldened to continue his career after what he's done this season. Paul has yet to miss a game, and can still put on a show.
San Antonio won their fair share of games this season due to Paul's intellect or outright shotmaking in the clutch. They came close to winning last night's game against the number one seed in the Eastern Conference, the Cleveland Cavaliers because Chris started making plays when they needed it.
That's what players like him do. They recognize those key moments that happen in every game whether it's to stop a run, step on a team's throat, or close a team out and he steps up to make it happen. He can't do it at the same rate he used to, but he can still put his stamp on the game, and the Spurs will need that going forward.
After dealing Tre Jones at the trade deadline, their options at backup point guard were limited. Blake Wesley has played good minutes lately, but his jump shot is still incredibly unreliable. Paul is only making $10 million this year, and could likely command a similar price next season, but it would be time for him to come off the bench.
De'Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle would take the reigns as the starting guards, and with Paul running the bench, the Spurs wouldn't have to worry about drafting a backup or spending money in free agency on the position. They need to add shooters and depth behind Victor Wembanyama first.
Nothing is set in stone yet. There's a lot of time between the end of this season and the start of the next one, so he could change his mind. But if CP3 plays another year, the Spurs should do everything they can to ensure it's with the Silver and Black again.
