Spurs' true feelings on De'Aaron Fox only confirm truth despite public noise

The San Antonio Spurs are fresh off their best season in years. Though it didn’t end in an NBA Championship, their run to the NBA Finals was impressive. Yet De’Aaron Fox still took a ton of heat. He struggled in the Finals, in particular. People were quick to jump on the ‘Trade Fox’ train, but it’s a bit too early for that. And the Spurs reportedly want to keep him around for a long time.

“After Fox's rough showing in the NBA Finals, team sources said the Spurs remain committed to the veteran, pointing out that San Antonio might have never reached the Finals without the point guard's contributions while playing on a high right ankle sprain,” wrote Michael C. Wright of ESPN.

Just because Fox struggled in the Finals doesn’t mean he’s incapable of contributing at a high level. The Spurs still believe he can be a focal point of their team moving forward.

Spurs still want to keep De'Aaron Fox around

Fox is still an All-Star. He’s still close to an All-NBA-caliber player. You don’t just get rid of someone like that unless you absolutely have to. And the Spurs don’t have to.

A big reason surrounding the masses’ calls to trade Fox is the fact that San Antonio already has two elite guards, and both are younger than Fox. Dylan Harper and Stephon Castle showed their true potential in the playoffs.

Harper looks like a future superstar. There were times in the postseason when it felt like Mitch Johnson should have kept him on the court. Sometimes, even over Fox.

Castle played well, too. He was one of the Spurs’ lead ball-handlers, and when Fox missed time, they turned to Castle to help carry the load in the playoffs.

But just because the Spurs have two good young guards doesn’t mean they can’t also have Fox. Neither Harper nor Castle makes a ton of money right now, so the Spurs can afford to have Fox and his massive contract.

And again, just because Fox didn’t play super well in the playoffs doesn’t mean he can’t contribute at the NBA level. He’s still one of the better point guards in the league.

He played poorly in the Finals. He was fresh off an injury and probably still dealing with said injury. That doesn’t define him as a player. And clearly, the Spurs still want to keep him around.

Fox is still a Spur, and based on the team’s feelings, he’s going to remain a Spur for a long while.
