Spurs' three-guard lineup can work with De'Aaron Fox offensive adjustment

There's a lot on De'Aaron Fox's plate next season. The All-Star point guard must bounce back after a rough NBA Finals performance while fitting into a stacked San Antonio Spurs backcourt. Taking on an off-ball role could be a viable solution; he can be even more efficient in the Spurs' offense while optimizing his time on the court with Dylan Harper and Stephon Castle.

Fox has been a ball-dominant player for most of his career, and he's excelled at taking on those duties. In 2023, he helped the Sacramento Kings make their first playoff appearance in over a decade. Just last season, he was a driving factor behind the Spurs winning over 60 games for the first time since 2014.

So he's always done a great job as a primary ball-handler. But next season, he may need to adjust his game a bit for the Spurs to get the best out of their lineups with him, Harper, and Castle.

De'Aaron Fox should take on some off-ball duties

When the Spurs added Fox to their roster, they hoped his expertise as a shot-creator would take their offense to the next level. It had that effect last season, but during the playoffs, it was very obvious that Harper was more reliable in that role. He ended up becoming their second-highest scorer in the NBA Finals.

So with his ascension, the best way for Fox to remain a valuable asset to the Spurs' scoring attack is to excel in an off-ball role. Improving as a catch-and-shoot option is one way for him to be dangerous next to Harper and Castle. His floor spacing could open up lanes for them to drive to the basket and punish opponents who choose to help off.

He can also take advantage of inattentive defenders by using his quickness to cut to the basket and make himself available for easy interior looks. Harper and Castle have the playmaking chops to get him the ball in those sorts of actions.

Great players know how to reinvent their game

Fox is no stranger to sacrificing something in his game for the greater good of his team. While he still acted as a primary shot creator for the Spurs last season, he had no problem taking fewer shot attempts to make room for Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle to shine on offense.

That unselfishness should bleed into next season. If the Spurs want to unlock the full potential of their three-guard lineup, Fox must take on more off-ball duties. Spacing the floor and punishing defenses with aggressive cuts to the rim are the new ways he can make a big impact offensively.

Star players know how to morph and adjust their approach to best fit their team, especially if they're determined to make a title run. If Fox continues to carry this mindset, it'll do wonders for the Spurs next season.
