With each win, the San Antonio Spurs' confidence is only growing. After their epic 25-point comeback against the L.A. Clippers, star Victor Wembanyama was clearly emotional after the win.
He knew just how far this team had come. The same could be said for the Spurs' late comeback against the Phoenix Suns.
They closed a 10-point gap in the final five minutes of the game, and Wembanyama hit the game winner. That led to a big postgame celebration with the Spurs having clinched their first playoff appearance in six years.
For young OGs such as Keldon Johnson and Devin Vassell, who have both been with the team for at least five seasons, it meant something even more.
This team has come a long way. Nevertheless, they still have further to go before they are actually NBA champions.
But their confidence is only growing, making those championship aspirations more realistic with each passing game.
The Spurs' confidence is growing just like their championship odds
It's no secret that San Antonio is one of the least experienced teams in the NBA. That has been used as a knock against them ahead of the playoffs.
However, that discounts this team's talent level. Applying old logic to this team simply won't work. After all, they are a unique team and can't be compared to teams before them.
For one, their young core is rapidly developing in season. There isn't a great comp for this team. How many teams can say their best players are dramatically improving in season?
Not many, but that's what's happening with the Spurs. We're seeing it now with Stephon Castle, Dylan Harper, and even Wembanyama.
The young Spurs are improving in real time
Castle's 3-point shooting has dramatically improved while his turnovers have dropped like a stone. Harper bounced back from an ugly January and has been more consistent and efficient since then.
Meanwhile, Wembanyama has entered the MVP conversation. He's been firing on all cylinders of late, averaging 27.5 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 3.1 blocks over his last eight games.
Better still, San Antonio is 8-0 during that span. It's hard not to gain more confidence when the wins are piling up. Hopefully, the Spurs' confidence will be sky high come playoff time, and that will carry them through to a championship. Even when going up against more experienced teams.
