The Spurs have never been in a situation like this. Two paths to the ultimate goal meet at the same point in time. A route that may take longer but deliver a more fruitful reward, or another that puts the Spurs in contention immediately.
Whatever path general manager Brian Wright chooses will determine the destiny of Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs organization as a whole. This decision is the most crucial choice that Wright will make and the highest-stakes determination anyone in the Spurs organization has made in over a decade.
Why is this decision so important?
The NBA is different from every other major professional sport in that things can change in an instant. This is both to the Spurs' benefit and detriment.
Adding Kevin Durant and aiming to win now could result in an NBA championship; we have observed a singular trade deliver this result before.
On the flip side, if the Spurs trade important future assets for Durant and he quickly flames out, they could halt their exciting trajectory instantly. While Durant won't go for a massive package, we have seen how one wrong move can set a team back for years.
On the path of youth, the Spurs could ride it out with their current assets. Wright could knock the 2nd and 14th picks out of the park and set up the Spurs with one of the best young cores in the NBA. With a few extra years of gelling and extra pieces sprinkled in, this potential squad could dominate the league for years to come.
However, as you should know very well, not all draft picks turn out well. Even likely second overall pick Dylan Harper is no guarantee. The 14th overall pick has a greater chance of going haywire, and who knows what happens with the rest of the Spurs' stash of draft capital.
If the Spurs wait around for the youth to develop, and that doesn't happen, Wright could be wasting Wembanyama's generational talent by not getting him the help he needs.
Have the Spurs ever been in a situation like this?
The Spurs' current situation is extremely rare. It is not every day that a team has two distinctly different paths to go down, and having them meet at a junction.
Teams like Golden State have been in a "bridge the gap" situation. The Warriors attempted to buy into the youth with their high draft capital while pushing for a championship. As we saw, their attempt at getting both had failed.
However, the Spurs' situation is different. The stakes are much higher. Dylan Harper is a talent much greater than anything the Warriors saw, while Wembanyama's entire future is on the line.
We witnessed Tim Duncan consider leaving the team in 2000, giving the Spurs a major headache, but he ultimately stayed, thus creating no problems. We also saw the Spurs trade Kawhi Leonard, one of their best franchise players, in 2018. But their hands were tied in that situation.
This is different. We have never seen anything like this in the modern days of Spurs basketball. I will be on the edge of my seat waiting to see what ultimately happens with this team in the coming weeks.
