Out of thin air, the Spurs have crafted one of the best young cores in basketball. Recovering strongly from a dry spell featuring DeMar DeRozan and Dejounte Murray, the Spurs have turned things around in a hurry. Amidst reconstruction, the Spurs won the lottery at the perfect time, landing generational prospect Victor Wembanyama.
But, it doesn't stop there. The Spurs have nailed pick after pick over recent drafts, compiling a top-tier group of young talent that spans across their entire roster. Whether it was deep selections such as Keldon Johnson or lottery picks in Stephon Castle and Jeremy Sochan, Brian Wright has done an excellent job.
With this injection of youth led by Wembanyama, the Spurs look to become an NBA giant. However, the people over at ESPN would like to disagree. Ranking 10th in their future power rankings article, the Spurs' blossoming talent is not getting the respect they rightfully deserve.
The Spurs have the makings of a future dynasty
Every dynasty has a superstar, and the Spurs have theirs. Wembanyama is on the precipice of becoming the face of the NBA. He could very well put himself in the running for MVP at the young age of 21, as he has already shown the makings of that. On defense, the alien is preparing to hold the Defensive Player of the Year award for the next decade. He truly has it all.
Having the rights to Victor Wembanyama alone should boost the Spurs' ranking towards the top. But it continues to get more intriguing. Next to the budding megastar is a uniquely wide cast of rising stars.
Don't forget that the big man's running mate, De'Aaron Fox, is 27 years old and not slowing down anytime soon. He is readying himself for his best season to date in his first complete season as a Spur.
Next to Fox will be the reigning Rookie of the Year, Stephon Castle. The rookie champion looked outstanding in his first NBA campaign and has shown the makings of a future star. With him on board, the Spurs will have an electric big three to hold their hat on, each with a dynamic offensive skillset. How many teams can say they have that?
Even the Spurs bench is loaded with promising young flair. Top to bottom, the Spurs have everything they need to become the next great NBA team. It's a matter of when, not if, the Spurs win an NBA championship. So why were they ranked so low?
They do not belong under teams such as the Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Clippers, who are deprived of youth and relying on aging veterans. Once the Spurs slide through their gelling period, they will be locked and loaded as a top dog in the Western Conference. And don't forget their treasure trove of draft picks stored away.
Ignore the rankings, the Spurs will be taking over the NBA in no time.
