Although the San Antonio Spurs have had an under-the-radar offseason, they have gotten much better, but which player benefits from their moves and which doesn't?
With a mostly returning roster, San Antonio may see several key players play a slightly different role than before.
Especially to make way for the few new faces that they added over the summer. Next, let's take a look at one winner and one loser from the Spurs' offseason thus far.
Winner-Victor Wembanyama
It might be cheating to put Victor Wembanyama as the winner of the offseason for the Spurs, but it's true. San Antonio was able to tweak a roster that came painfully close to winning a championship last season.
They needed more depth at power forward and to cut the dead weight behind him at center, and they did both. They brought in Tobias Harris at power forward, giving them much more to work with at a position of weakness.
They also bought in Tarris Reed Jr. and Jayden Quaintance to replace their aging trio of centers behind Wemby and Luke Kornet. Those moves should make an already championship-caliber roster better, and Wembanyama improving himself could be all it takes for the Spurs to win it all next season.
Loser-Keldon Johnson
It's hard to say that this offseason has gone well for veteran forward Keldon Johnson. Johnson had an awful NBA Finals run, and the Spurs have seemingly pivoted away from their long-time player.
They added Harris and extended Julian Champagnie. That gives them an honest-to-goodness power forward rotation. It also spells the end of Johnson playing at the four.
Now, he will likely be splitting minutes with Devin Vassell and Carter Bryant at small forward, and his playing time may decrease significantly next season. Worse yet, he will be in a contract year and has yet to receive an extension from the Spurs. Not a great summer for Johnson, though the Spurs have had a strong one.
