This year, unlike most, there aren't a ton of big names wandering on the trade market. This is especially the case for the Spurs. Players on the board, such as Karl Anthony-Towns and Ja Morant, don't make any sense for San Antonio. However, one asset hailing from Brooklyn could change the landscape for the Silver and Black: Michael Porter Jr.
In the wake of struggles from Harrison Barnes and the offense as a whole, Spurs fans have been calling to make a splash deal for a player who can consistently fill it up on offense. Look no further than the pure sniper that is Michael Porter Jr.
Michael Porter Jr. is enduring a career year
Michael Porter Jr., otherwise known as MPJ, is a grade-A bucket getter. In his first season in Brooklyn, the power forward has piled on a career-high 25.7 points per game and looks toward earning the first All-Star appearance of his career. In a Nets offense centered around him, the former coveted prospect is dominating like his younger self once did.
The longtime Denver Nugget never got the chance to showcase his true talents playing next to a star-studded cast. Now, MPJ is taking over games as a tough-shot maker and three-point specialist. He is creating offense for himself off the dribble and with the help of his team's playmakers. So far, this year, he has been must-watch TV.
MPJ would fit seamlessly into the San Antonio offense
Although the bucket-getter won't get the same amount of volume in San Antonio, he would provide exactly what the Spurs have been looking for. Capable of scoring in various ways, MPJ would play smoothly alongside Fox, Castle, and Wembanyama in the starting lineup.
With so much dribble penetration happening in San Antonio, Michael would get a bevy of shot opportunities from outside. He'd be one of the few Spurs we could rely on to shoot from deep, hitting 39.8% on long balls this season. When San Antonio's offense stagnates, MPJ could step into his Brooklyn role and ignite it on his own.
With his elite offensive prowess, Porter Jr. would likely fit into any offense in the NBA, making the optics of him in San Antonio all the more intriguing. As one of the best high-volume snipers in the game right now, MPJ would instantly turn the Spurs' attack into one of the deadliest in the league.
While the prospects of bringing MPJ are exciting, there may be a bidding war for his services. Several teams across the NBA have been linked to the future All-Star, meaning the cost to bring him in won't be cheap. The frequently discussed Kelly Olynyk and Jeremy Sochan package is unlikely to secure a deal.
Still, if San Antonio is seriously trying to improve the recently lackluster offense, bringing in the flamethrower could be worthwhile. The Spurs haven't been among the teams vying for Porter Jr.'s talents, yet don't be surprised if General Manager Brian Wright goes for the home run.
