Spurs need De'Aaron Fox to lead Dylan Harper to his next step

The San Antonio Spurs have one of the best rosters in basketball. Yet after losing in the NBA Finals, there were some rumblings that suggested they should consider De’Aaron Fox, who struggled on the league’s biggest stage. But they shouldn’t do that. Not just because of how good Fox is, but because of what he can do for Dylan Harper.

During the playoffs last year, Harper was a revelation. The rookie guard was one of the best players on the court for the Spurs, coming up big in some clutch moments. But obviously, as all rookies do, he still has a ton of room to grow if he wants to reach his full potential. And improving as a playmaker should be one of his top priorities.

Having Fox around will help with that. Fox is a great passer and was one of the key creators for San Antonio’s offense from a playmaking perspective last year.

The Spurs have what may be the best young core in the NBA. Obviously, it’s spearheaded by Victor Wembanyama, and Stephon Castle is right behind him. Then, there’s Harper.

Harper has all the talent in the world. He could be one of the best guards in the NBA in a few years, but he needs to keep progressing in order to get to that point.

One of the areas in which he needs to improve the most is his playmaking. He’s already a solid passer, but with his ability to create advantages, he has the chance to take things to another level.

Fox is one of the better playmakers in the league. Right now, he’s probably the best passer on the Spurs. He is the perfect guy to help Harper improve in that area of his game.

Take the playoffs, for example. When Fox was out, the Spurs’ offense felt it. And as soon as he returned to the lineup, his passing helped open things up for them.

Castle did his best to handle a lot of the playmaking duties, but even he struggled with turnovers. Fox just did a great job of providing the Spurs with a steady hand.

That’s the type of stuff he can teach Harper. He can show him how to run an NBA offense without turning the ball over. He can show him how to capitalize on the advantages he creates.

Fox is a perfect playmaking mentor for Harper to learn from moving forward.
