The San Antonio Spurs' roster is likely set, but an intriguing star trade target just reemerged ahead of training camp.
With just six weeks remaining until NBA training camp, the San Antonio Spurs' roster is likely set. Even so, an intriguing trade target just reemerged for the Spurs, who could make a move in-season.
Utah Jazz forward Lauri Markkanen had a down year last season, which resulted in his trade stock dropping. However, after a strong showing at EuroBasket, he should be back on teams' radar.

While his contract, which will pay him $45+ million over the next four years, is seen as a big negative, Markkanen is one of the best shooters in the NBA. He reminded everyone of that by drilling a staggering 14 threes over the first three games of EuroBasket connecting on 53.8% of his shots from deep.
Given that the Spurs desperately need shooting, he'd almost single-handedly solve, far and away, their biggest flaw. It will cost them, however.
The Spurs should strongly consider trading for Lauri Markkanen
Potential trade machinations for Markkanen would likely include Devin Vassell and Keldon Johnson, plus the Atlanta Hawks' 2027 first, and possibly another asset, perhaps even Jeremy Sochan. Or, they could get really bold and trade De'Aaron Fox for Markkanen straight up.
In that scenario, the Spurs would have a lineup consisting of Dylan Harper, Stephon Castle, Harrison Barnes, Markkanen, and Wembanyama. That would free up San Antonio to go with what could be the backcourt of the future.
It would also add more shooting to the mix, making it harder to double-team Wembanyama without leaving an open shooter. Still, the more likely scenario would be shipping out Vassell and Johnson with their salaries mostly offsetting Markkanen's over the next two seasons. If they were to include Sochan, then the Spurs would actually save significant money long-term in this deal.
Lauri Markkanen could turn the San Antonio Spurs into contenders
That might make them more expensive in the long run, but it would also dramatically increase their ceiling, too, putting them in contention next season. A starting lineup featuring Fox, Castle, Barnes, Markannen, and Wembanyama would have plenty of playmaking, shooting, and versatility to go toe-to-toe with just about any team.
That might be an all-in move if the Spurs are better than expected and looking to make a championship push sooner rather than later. It would be an aggressive trade, but it is not out of GM Brian Wright's wheelhouse to make a big move.
If Markannen can bounce back next season, he would be the perfect trade target. That's considering his fit and that his contract mostly matches up with several expendable Spurs players.
Ultimately, Markkanen might be the ideal trade target ahead of the deadline, especially if he has a strong season. If he does, then the Spurs should strongly consider trading for him next season.
