After news broke that former San Antonio Spurs star Kawhi Leonard was embroiled in a possible scandal involving salary cap circumvention, Spurs fans couldn't help but laugh. The NBA is currently investigating both the L.A. Clippers and Leonard, which could permanently tarnish both player and franchise.
Meanwhile, the Spurs finally have their best team since Leonard demanded to be traded. They could even potentially have a better record than Leonard and the Clippers next season.
That, combined with potential punishments for Leonard and the Clippers, means that Spurs fans are riding high right now. So much so that some have even suggested that the Spurs help the NBA with their investigation into Leonard in the Clippers.
The Spurs could do so by sharing potential improper demands that Leonard and his uncle, Dennis Robertson, made while he was a member of the team.
The Spurs should steer clear of the Kawhi Leonard investigation
Despite the temptation to bury their former superstar, the Spurs should resist. After all, fans around the NBA are already starting to see that Leonard is more trouble than he's worth.
Moreover, his popularity has taken a major hit with allegations surrounding both the Clippers and him. The allegation that Leonard is sought up to $50 million in additional salary, on top of his then $175 million contract, is an outrageous demand for any player.
If proven true, it could set the Clippers back for years to come. In fact, they likely already regret bending over backwards to bring Leonard to Los Angeles with little to show for it six years later.
The Spurs should feel vindicated after the latest Kawhi drama
The Spurs have a chance to finally make the playoffs for the first time in the aftermath of the Leonard trade. Actually, depending on how severe the Clippers' punishment is, the Spurs could be taking L.A.'s spot in the playoffs.
Or, perhaps even better, the Spurs and Clippers meet in the playoffs. There, San Antonio would have a chance to beat Leonard and finally bury that part of their past for good.
That might ultimately be more satisfying for the Spurs and fans than whatever punishment the league hands down to Leonard and the Clippers.
Ultimately, the Spurs should steer clear of the Leonard investigation. Thus far, they have taken the high road after being forced to part with their former franchise, star, they should keep it that way and let him bury himself and the Clippers in the process.
