Spurs have left door wide open for Dylan Harper to leap to superstardom

All eyes will soon be on San Antonio Spurs guard Dylan Harper, who could be in for a breakout season. San Antonio is likely hoping that Harper will quickly emerge as a superstar and will very well be given the potential he's shown.

While he is still expected to come off the bench this season, he could take on a bigger role, possibly averaging 28 to 30 minutes per game. That would be a big jump in playing time and, hopefully, production.

During the playoffs, he averaged a stellar 19 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per 36 minutes. If he plays around 30 minutes per game this season and matches or improves on his playoff performance, he could be in for a big season.

It's ironic that despite the Spurs already having an all-star in De'Aaron Fox and a rising star in Stephon Castle, Harper appears to have the highest ceiling of the three. If the Spurs plan on essentially making him a starter off the bench by playing him big minutes, which it seems like they are, then he will get a chance to prove it.

The coaching staff has also made things easier on him by primarily tasking him with scoring rather than running the offense. That's the benefit of having Fox and Castle, with Harper being able to play with either and have them handle the playmaking while he strictly gets buckets.

The biggest way this Spurs team can differentiate itself from last season's team is Harper. He has the most room to grow and could conceivably increase his scoring to around 17 points per game this year. That would also change how the Spurs play.

Dylan Harper could propel the Spurs to greatness this season

Last season, San Antonio relied heavily on Keldon Johnson to carry their bench. However, Harper could be given the keys to the second unit and lead a revamped second unit that includes him, Johnson, Tobias Harris, and Luke Kornet.

That four-man unit, paired with a starter, would be a massive improvement that helps San Antonio keep their foot on the gas for all 48 minutes. That could also give Harper ample room to grow and take on more responsibility for the Spurs.

Think of how Manu Ginobili was given a chance to shine playing with the second unit while Tim Duncan and Tony Parker carried the starters. That did wonders for Ginobili's game and could do the same for Harper, eventually leading to him starting.

If everything goes according to plan, Harper could be the perfect co-star to Victor Wembanyama, and San Antonio is setting him up for success this season.
