When De'Aaron Fox made it clear he wanted to join the San Antonio Spurs ahead of February's trade deadline, he also made it clear he wanted to play for a contending team. Well now, given the rapidly advancing nature of the rumors surrounding Giannis Antetokounmpo, it appears the Spurs could become just the type of contender he hoped for very soon.

If you haven't been paying attention to the latest NBA news, it appears that Giannis Antetokounmpo could be leaving the Milwaukee Bucks between now and the start of next season. While he has not yet made an official trade request from the organization, he did make it clear that he is exploring options outside of Milwaukee for the first time in his career.

Of course, this leaves the Spurs with a rather big opportunity. If they're able to swoop in and make a considerable trade offer to the Bucks, it seems very feasible that Giannis could have a desire to play with a superstar like Victor Wembanyama in San Antonio.

There's no telling what kind of moving pieces could be involved here. It could involve the Spurs sending Stephon Castle to Milwaukee, but most of the fan base would very much hope that's not the case. But in any event, Antetokounmpo joining forces with Wemby in San Antonio would mean one thing: That the Spurs would be a bona fide championship contender, no question about it.

Antetokounmpo would make SAS the contender Fox envisioned

Victor Wembanyama's talent is already at the level of a top 15 player in the association today. As for Giannis Antetokounmpo, he's undoubtedly a top three player on the planet. If you put these two together in the same starting frontcourt, there's no telling what kind of havoc they could wreak on the NBA.

From there, the supporting pieces would obviously matter if you're looking to become a true top-of-the-line championship contender. However, the fact that you would have as much elite talent like Wemby and Giannis means that the Spurs would be in an excellent spot regardless of who fills out the bench.

And in the end, what this would do is satisfy the vision Fox had for the Spurs when he chose them ahead of the February trade deadline. Fox was tired of being on an up-and-down team in the Sacramento Kings, and was ready to have his talents utilized by a team that could go deep in the playoffs every year.

It's safe to say that Giannis Antetokounmpo making the move to San Antonio would put the Spurs in this kind of category. With Fox, Castle, and likely Dylan Harper roaming on the perimeter, as well as Giannis and Victor occupying the interior, the Spurs would be one of the scariest teams in the NBA.
