Spurs gave Victor Wembanyama the ultimate gift with Tarris Reed Jr. and more

The San Antonio Spurs have a very clear pathway to winning a championship in the Victor Wembanyama era. Alongside Dylan Harper and Stephon Castle, Wembanyama has a great supporting cast around him, and he’s clearly good enough to lead a team to the promised land. And this summer, the Spurs have done a great job of insulating him with plenty of center depth to back him up.

Luke Kornet was already in place. But during the NBA Draft, the Spurs picked up Jayden Quaintance and Tarris Reed Jr., as well as Maliq Brown in the second round. All three of those guys could play some center minutes for the Spurs in a pinch, and a couple of them could develop into long-term pieces behind Wembanyama.

San Antonio needs to keep Wembanyama healthy for deep playoff runs, and surrounding him with plenty of other talent at the center spot is a great way to do that.

Kornet was a massive pickup for the Spurs last summer. Adding him meant that the Spurs could play non-Wembanyama lineups without having to worry too much about a drop-off in play.

Obviously, Kornet struggled to keep up in the postseason, so the Spurs could use a backup to play in the playoffs, but he could always improve. Or one of the rookies could step up in that spot.

Regardless, Kornet was important for San Antonio in the regular season, and having him in town will help the Spurs keep Wembanyama well-rested all the way up until the playoffs.

Then, there’s Quaintance. He was the No. 20 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, and though he has a lengthy injury history, he is oozing with potential.

Quaintance barely played this past season, and the season prior, he tore his ACL. However, when he’s on the court, he’s an elite defender who could make the Spurs an even bigger threat on that end.

Reed may be the most intriguing player San Antonio took, because he could actually play real minutes right away. He’s a big body who can bang down low, rebound the ball, and pass a little bit.

For the nights when Wembanyama is out, or Kornet doesn’t have it, Mitch Johnson should be able to play Reed real minutes from the jump. That’s a huge addition.

Brown is more of a power forward, and he’s just a two-way guy, but he’s a solid flyer for the Spurs, too.

San Antonio walked into the summer with only Kornet backing Wembanyama up, and now, they have plenty of depth. That’s a huge win for Wemby.
