With rumors of the San Antonio Spurs' interest in Trey Murphy III, the likelihood of a trade seems low, but it's not impossible. The Spurs still have plenty of assets needed to get a deal done.
It also helps that the New Orleans Pelicans have been making questionable move after questionable move. If the Spurs are eager enough and new Pelicans GM Joe Dumars is foolish enough, there is the possibility of San Antonio getting a deal done involving Murphy III.
What would a Trey Murphy III trade look like for the Spurs?
The Spurs will inevitably have to cough up multiple first-round picks in a possible deal for Murphy III, but they could potentially kill two birds with one stone. The most likely trade could see them dealing Devin Vassell as matching salary.
They would also trade the better of the Spurs and Hawks 2026 first, the Hawks 2027 first, and the 2031 Sacramento pick swap San Antonio owns. That's a lot for Murphy III, but he is coming off a career year in which he averaged a terrific 21.2 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 3.5 assists.
He also shot an impressive 36.1% from three on 8.3 3-point attempts per game, proving that he can be an effective high-volume 3-point shooter. He is also on an affordable contract that will only pay him $4 million more than Vassell over the next four years.
Should the Spurs go all-in on Trey Murphy III?
The pushback amongst Spurs fans would be that San Antonio might have a Murphy III player type already on the roster in Carter Bryant. However, he could be years away from being as good as Murphy III is now. If he ever is.
That is key because the Spurs could hit the ground running with a lineup of De'Aaron Fox, Steph Castle, Murphy III, Harrison Barnes, and Victor Wembanyama. Good luck scoring against that lineup or stopping them offensively. The trade would definitely make the team better sooner than expected, though they would be out a first-round pick in 2026, 2027, and 2031.
That might be a little too rich a price for Murphy III, even though he would definitely improve the Spurs on both sides of the ball. If his price goes down or the Spurs are better than expected, then they may reconsider such a big move at the trade deadline. However, a lot would have to happen between now and then.
Overall, the Spurs may still have a path to trading for Murphy III. While it may be unlikely, if they can land him, it would be a huge get and propel San Antonio into title contention.
