During the regular season, focus should mainly be on the reality the Spurs face on a daily basis, but in the offseason, we can play fantasy GM a little bit. That's what a fan on social media did when he designed a three-team trade between San Antonio, Boston, and New Orleans to bring Trey Murphy III to Texas. And to be honest, I don't hate it.

A move like this would give San Antonio the unquestioned best starting lineup and overall team in the NBA. They'd be perennial favorites to win the championship every year. Murphy fits perfectly into the composition of this team. He's supremely skilled as a defender, and he's morphed into a reliable scorer with range.
Putting him next to Victor Wembanyama, Stephon Castle, Devin Vassell, and De'Aaron Fox would be downright unfair, and opponents would feel the same. The crazy part is that it wouldn't even break San Antonio's bank. This trade could 100% happen financially, but the dominance that follows would send owners to the Commissioner's office with unbelievable haste.
The Spurs would wreck the league with a Trey Murphy III addition
SA had one of the best starting lineups in the NBA last season. Adding Murphy would likely allow them to claim the top spot unequivocally. He's taller, longer, and scores the ball better than Julian Champagnie, and he does it with more versatility. But that doesn't mean Juju has to go anywhere.
The Spurs suddenly have the best bench in the league if this were to happen. Dylan Harper would be in his second year, spearheading a unit with Tobias Harris, Julian Champagnie, Carter Bryant, Luke Kornet, and Tarris Reed Jr. backing him up. Opposing fan bases would call the collection of talent unjust, believing the current CBA should save them from the horror of dealing with a team so stacked.
The wild part is this trade actually works financially
Exchanging Trigga Trey's $27 million with Keldon Johnson's $18 million would be a no-brainer. Murphy is just about to enter his prime at 26 years old, and he's proven himself to be more than a handful. Fans will remember the stress he put Spurs Nation through when he dropped 41 points in November or the 32 points he scored in January against the Silver and Black.
San Antonio would only be adding a net of $9 million to their cap. That's very doable right now. The money crunch would come later when Wemby's max extension hits, but only for a single season in 2027-28. However, they could avoid that financial pressure by moving Tobias Harris after one season instead of keeping him for the full two years he signed for, and everything would be just fine.
Do I think Boston or the Pelicans would do this deal? Maybe, maybe not. But this isn't about them. It's about what would happen if the Spurs were able to pull off the basketball equivalent of a cheat code. Glory would reign, immediately followed by calls to Adam Silver asking what methods they could use to break the Spurs up before they rattle off the next 6 championships in a row.
That's the world I want to live in.
