Jeremy Sochan might be the biggest winner of the San Antonio Spurs-Knicks NBA Finals matchup, since he'll get a ring no matter who hoists the Larry O'Brien trophy. He has a preferred outcome, though, and it involves celebrating a title in New York. He's willing to help however he can to make that happen, including telling his new team about his former.
As Jared Schwartz of the New York Post wrote, Sochan will tell the Knicks everything he knows (subscription required) about Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs:
"Whether I'm playing or not, it's important to feed all the information I have. And I think I know quite a lot."
You might be wondering what Sochan knows that New York doesn't already have on a scouting report. He specifically mentioned ways to wear down Wembanyama, saying the Knicks need to "be very physical" and "make him run," which, in turn, will force the Spurs superstar to take plays off.
Or, at least, it's supposed to work that way.
Jeremy Sochan is using his inside Spurs info to help the Knicks
San Antonio waived Sochan, the No. 9 overall draft pick in 2022, in February, making him a free agent. He had several suitors, but chose to sign with the Knicks.
He played sparingly to end the regular season, averaging 6.9 minutes across 16 games. Sochan has appeared in five of New York's 14 playoff contests, none of which came in the conference finals. His best game was Game 5 of the Knicks' first-round series against the Hawks, when he dropped 10 points (4-of-4 shooting) in three minutes.
Still, he's likely not a player who Mike Brown will call on during the NBA Finals, unless it's a blowout, but he's finding other ways to make himself useful.
It doesn't feel right knowing that Sochan is giving the Knicks inside information, though it's totally expected. He'd be doing the same if he went from New York to San Antonio. It's worth wondering how much of an edge he will truly give his new squad. Anything helps, though, right? Knowing him, he's also making sure his teammates know whose buttons to push, and when. He's an A+ agitator.
The Spurs have already defied the odds by reaching the finals as a young team, but they have to keep their composure on the NBA's biggest stage. Sochan might be working behind the scenes to keep that from happening, but this is a team that just made it past Oklahoma City in seven games. That won't stop him from trying, though.
Now, let's see if it will pay off.
