The Spurs have evolved in unidentifiable ways from the old days

When you think of the San Antonio Spurs, you likely think of a methodical, slow-moving, and pass-heavy team. For years, the Spurs played this brand of basketball that was effective yet not exactly the most exciting. In the 2000s, the Spurs were led by their "boring" superstar, Tim Duncan, who altogether avoided the flashy plays, and his teammates were no different.

The Spurs relished the success of this style and hadn't had a care in the world for how it might appear to others. With Gregg Popovich as the orchestrator of this method, the Spurs held this playstyle close for decades.

However, the times are changing. Popovich has handed the reins to Mitch Johnson, and the Spurs are home to a group of showstoppers. Get ready, because the Spurs are going to knock your socks off.

The Spurs will look completely different from past eras

The catalyst for the Spurs' transition into a high-flying and electrifying squad is the induction of Victor Wembanyama. The Spurs' newest generational superstar is unlike the others. While Duncan, David Robinson, and Manu Ginobili played ethical, sound, and rule-abiding hoops, the Alien has broken every barrier we thought possible.

The Spurs' latest big man is not getting down low with his back to the basket; he is stepping beyond the arc for threes, taking players off the dribble, and magically scoring layups around the rim. His offense style is nothing short of breathtaking. It is impossible to take your eyes off him. Yet, it doesn't stop there.

Next to Wembanyama will be a deep cast of players who love to put on a show. First of the bunch is De'Aaron Fox. The one thing that pops out when watching the star guard is his speed. When the Swipa takes off, you will not be able to stop him. In the blink of an eye, De'Aaron will have taken himself from one side of the court to the other. It is truly a sight to see.

Unlike past Spurs eras, this Spurs team loves to slam it down. Last season, the Spurs set a franchise record with 435 dunks. This was led by Fox's backcourt mate Stephon Castle, who, more than anyone, knows how to throw it down. The reigning Rookie of the Year is masterful at capturing the attention of a crowd with a highlight dunk.

Beyond the team's stars, the Spurs' rotation is bubbling with thrilling players. For the first time in Spurs history, we will get to watch the team rain down threes like never before. The Spurs are preparing to shatter three-point records in 2025-26 with a uniquely built squad that can get it done.

In sum, the entire team will be running up and down the court, making jaw-dropping plays and playing the game in an entirely non-Spurs-like fashion. While your grandparents may not like it, I hope you enjoy the new era of Spurs basketball and the frenzy it will bring.
