Spurs' dream Steph Curry trade would lead to nightmare scenario they must avoid

Long-time San Antonio Spurs rival Steph Curry may potentially hit the trade market, but any hope of landing him could cost them dearly. The Golden State Warriors aren't openly shopping Curry, but with him not signing an extension, he could become a free agent after next season.

That means he could possibly leave for nothing next summer. In turn, it could force the Warriors to consider trading him if he's unwilling to extend before then.

San Antonio would seemingly be a perfect fit given how close they came to winning the championship last season and their wealth of draft assets as well as prospects. However, any potential trade for Curry will likely include either Stephon Castle or Dylan Harper. In fact, Heavy.com’s Sai Mohan proposed a trade for Curry that involved Harper.

Hear me now, there isn't a player in the NBA the Spurs should consider trading either prospect for, including Curry. Keeping both Castle and Harper out of trades is a no-brainer given their potential. Harper, especially with him having shown flashes of superstardom.

Even though the Spurs are unlikely to trade Castle or Harper, they could still put together a competitive offer, but several things would have to go right for that to happen. The Warriors would have to come to the realization that they aren't going to be a contender in the near future.

If that finally dawns on them, then moving Curry could be on the table. For San Antonio's part, they need De'Aaron Fox to have a strong start to next season, which in turn would raise his trade value.

The Spurs might not have to trade Harper for Currry

You see where I'm going with this, right? Instead of trading Harper or Castle, San Antonio could potentially trade Fox, two first-round picks, and two second-rounders, for Curry. That would be extra impactful for the Spurs. They would be getting out of having to pay Fox the remaining four years of his max contract.

Instead, they would likely extend Curry for two more years, possibly the final deal of his career. Barring that, there wouldn't be another way for the Spurs to acquire him. Adding him would certainly be a coup, especially given his shooting and the potential impact he'd have playing alongside Victor Wembanyama.

Nevertheless, San Antonio is well positioned to win a championship next season and beyond. As a result, the Silver and Black shouldn't dare include Castle on Harper in a potential trade for Curry.
