Spurs' doomsday playoff scenario is more likely then you think

At this point, the Spurs are undoubtedly among the top contenders to win the NBA Finals in 2026. Nearly everything has fallen perfectly into place, and the puzzle has shaped up to be a beautiful one. The way they have been playing, it appears they have a fast track route to a Larry O'Brien trophy. But we are forgetting one thing.

Entering the year, this team's depth was in serious question. Many wondered whether San Antonio had enough complementary help to support its stars. As the season wore on, those doubts began to vanish. With everyone firing on all cylinders, no one has questioned the Silver and Black's role players. However, it may be time to reignite that fear.

The Spurs' role players will play a key part in the playoffs

I want to live in a world where the Spurs steamroll their way to a championship; I really do. But when is that ever the case? Unless you are the 2017 Warriors, the playoffs bring difficulties. The lights become brighter, and everything slows down.

While most stars typically hold up in the postseason, any given playoff series could be determined by the success or failure of the role players. Whether a team's complementary pieces show up often determines whether the run collapses. The Spurs will be looking to avoid a disappointing early exit.

With all of that being said, all eyes will be on the Spurs bench unit to step up when it matters most. The world will be focused on players such as Harrison Barnes, Julian Champagnie, and Devin Vassell. If they can't hold up their end of the bargain, it may be the beginning of the end for San Antonio.

There is real reason to doubt the Spurs bench in the playoffs

We have heard it all year long: the Spurs lack experience. While it is incredibly annoying to hear, it is undeniably true. We have no idea how these guys will perform come playoff time. There are no stats to support the assumption that everyone steps up. However, there is one player for whom we have evidence, and it is damning.

Harrison Barnes is the one true veteran with a rich playoff basketball history. Unfortunately, it's not pretty. Over the course of his 14-year career, HB has shot a rough 41.9% from the field and 34.3% from beyond the arc in the postseason.

In several series with the Warriors, such as 2015 against the Grizzlies and 2016 against the Rockets, the sharpshooter was a no-show. San Antonio hopes to get the positive HB, not the one we saw in those previous battles. His efficiency could make or break the Spurs.

Harrison Barnes' playoff inconsistencies combined with a group of guys who never stepped foot into a playoff arena is a frightening reality for San Antonio.

There is no telling what could happen once the gang finally enters the postseason. There is a very real world where the blazing hot Spurs cool off when it matters most. Let's hope that doesn't happen.
