We're only days away from the start of San Antonio's next dynasty. All of the major pieces have been acquired and the only remaining thing they'll need is time together. Critics haven't wanted to give it to them. They've suggested the Spurs break up their young dynamic duo before they even get on the floor together due to worries over "fit."
If you've listened to the fearmongers speak on the Silver and Black's alleged misfortune of having two downhill playmakers, you've heard some version of the phrase "they can package one of them with additional assets to get a star." They're completely missing the obvious option right under their noses.
The Spurs already have their stars of the future
And they didn't have to make a trade to get them. De'Aaron Fox is a star in his own right, but we all know that there will come a time when he moves on from Alamo City. That time just isn't now or any time soon, for that matter. That's actually another reason why the Spurs would be foolish to make any large moves.
Fox will be the elite hooper they need to make runs in the playoffs right now. As the fastest player in the league with the ball in his hands, Swipa is also a clutch bucket-getter, and he's a fantastic fit for Victor Wembanyama. By the time the franchise is ready to hand the keys to Dylan Harper and Stephon Castle, they'll be more than ready to take charge.
Castle's rookie season was important for him. The Spurs invested in his growth by feeding him the ball early and often. He learned from Chris Paul, and in the offseason, worked on being a more consistently reliable playmaker. The result of his hard work already has doubters changing their minds about him.
Kevin O'Connor, a longtime NBA writer, has been hesitant to jump all the way on San Antonio's bandwagon. He's been one of the loudest critics, unsure about how the pieces fit together, but last night, O'Connor posted a different opinion on social media, signaling that he's beginning to see the light.
"Stephon Castle looks primed for a leap. 16 points and 9 assists with 2 steals last night in 25 minutes. Made some beautiful passes where the ball barely touched his hands. A perfect connective piece. If his scoring keeps coming, there's obvious star upside for the Spurs."
That's what we're saying! The majority of Spurs Nation has been on Castle's side from the beginning. He doesn't need the ball in his hands 100% of the time to be effective, but he'll make great plays with it when he gets it. He's a connector from the guard position that keeps the offense flowing and defenses off balance. As long as he makes the right plays, he'll thrive in the offense.
Harper doesn't need much pub. He's the one that everyone has already embraced as the future. His poise, decision-making, and skill have already been on display, and he hasn't played a real game yet. It's overwhelmingly obvious that the Spurs made the right decision in drafting Rutgers' best player and keeping Castle. The next step will be showing everyone else.
