Spurs can’t overreact to season with trade deadline madness

For people like me, and perhaps yourself, the trade deadline is one of the most fun times of the year. There's nothing I love more than a juicy deal. However, as a Spurs fan, don't get your hopes up for anything massive.

The Spurs are currently sitting pretty with the second seed in the Western Conference, a height that no one could have imagined. Despite that, many fans are calling for the front office to make a move to help push this team even further into contention. I am not one of those fans.

The Spurs have proven they can beat the best

If I were to ask anyone what the key to winning the Western Conference would be before the season, they would probably say beating the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Spurs have already done that three times. Not only that, they have gone on to beat both the Houston Rockets and the Denver Nuggets, who both stand tall as the next greatest competitors.

Even with some tough losses to inferior opponents recently, it is abundantly clear that the Spurs are championship contenders. San Antonio has proven it can win its most important games with this current roster. In fact, they have done so with several key players missing time.

Everything is already in place for this team. With all of the monumental moves made in the offseason, this roster is undeniably loaded from top to bottom. It has depth out of this world and a bevy of stars manning the ship up top. When everyone is striking, this unit is unstoppable. You just need to look past the cold streaks that several players have been on.

San Antonio must continue to build for the future

It is important to remember that the Spurs are looking to build another dynasty, not be a one-and-done team. The Silver and Black are one of the youngest squads in the NBA and have the recipe to dominate the league for a very long time. But with so many assets still in the trunk, they can take this thing to a whole other level.

Instead of dishing out any of the Hawks' picks or the bundle of pick swaps San Antonio has saved, they can use those assets to round out the greatest young core the NBA has ever seen. Much like what the Thunder have been doing, the Spurs can fill their bench with day-one-ready rookie contributors on cheap contracts.

While I don't want to rule out a deal happening in the upcoming offseason or in future years, I believe that General Manager Brian Wright needs to stay put for the next month leading up to the trade deadline. He must let the Spurs ride it out and see what this current core can do before taking drastic measures.

In the worst-case scenario, the Spurs fumble in the playoffs, and Brian Wright can then start to evaluate his options. But for now, I would advise him to keep calm and carry on.
