Following a stellar NBA Draft, the San Antonio Spurs are gearing up for a terrific offseason, but is a trade for former team star Kawhi Leonard in the cards? I can hear fans now collectively saying, "Nah, we're good."
Look, I get it; Kawhi bailed on the team and forced his way out of town, leaving the Spurs to spend years rebuilding. However, ESPN's Bobby Marks mentioned that several teams could be looking to trade for Kawhi, including his former teams.
He could have meant the Toronto Raptors, though the Spurs might make plenty of sense too. Assuming they can bury the hatchet. Next', let's take a look at the bold proposed trade to bring Kawhi back to San Antonio.
Proposed Spurs would bring Kawhi Leonard back to San Antonio
The proposed trade would send Keldon Johnson, Devin Vassell, and the Atlanta Hawks' 2027 first-round pick to the L.A. Clippers in exchange for Leonard. That trade would certainly make most fans furious with the team trading two long-time Spurs players for a traitor.
The obvious solution would be to trade De'Aaron Fox in a Kawhi deal instead of Johnson and Vassell. However, I'm skeptical that the Clippers would be willing to take back Fox. After all, they drafted a point guard in the lottery and have an all-star guard in Darius Garland.
The Spurs would also possibly have to include more assets. Therefore, trading Johnson and Vassell is really the only other way of landing Kawhi, but the bigger question is, should they?
Should the Spurs trade for Kawhi Leonard?
Bringing Kawhi back is more complicated than just hurt feelings. He has just one year left on his contract, assuming it doesn't get voided by the league.
If he were to get traded, he'd likely want an extension, and San Antonio can't afford to pay him, Fox, and Wembanyama. That would hasten the need for the Spurs to trade Fox elsewhere.
However, in the short term, San Antonio would have an absolutely monster roster. The Spurs could start Fox, Stephon Castle, Kawhi, Julian Champagnie, and Wembanyama.
It would leave them thin on the perimeter but give them a go-to scorer and passer who can also rebound and still more than hold his own on defense. Having a true 1A co-star for Wembanyama would be a game changer and possibly be worth it.
Even if it's just a short-term rental. Giving up Vassell and Johnson to make that happen would hurt, but if Kawhi wants back with the Spurs, then they should make it happen.
