San Antonio Spurs are probably having so much fun this season that they have a pick swap with the Atlanta Hawks in this year's NBA Draft. The Hawks are currently three games under .500 and just traded away their franchise player, meaning that pick very well could end up being in the lottery.
If that is the case, could the Spurs look for Wemby's frontcourt partner of the future? According to the latest mock draft from Christopher Kline of FanSided, who has the Spurs taking power forward Hannes Steinbach from Washington, yes.
Steinbach is a 19 year-old 7-footer from Germany who's posting some pretty outrageous splits for a freshman in a major conference. 18.2 points, 11.2 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.8 stocks, 39 percent from 3-point range and six 20-point outings in his first 12 career college games.
He's not a perfect prospect; but Steinback, theoretically, brings the floor spacing, on-ball ability, and versatility that would complement Wemby's elite rim-protection and interior dominance. And right now, drafting anyone who could hypothetically help Wemby in any way is a worthwhile draft strategy.
Hannes Steinbach and Victor Wembanyama could be a dangerous duo
The Spurs added Luke Kornet and Kelly Olynyk this offseason. What if there was a player who combined the best traits of both of them?
That's who Hannes Steinbach is. Well, maybe. Eventually.
Steinbach is going to be a raw prospect and it might take a few years before he's Wemby's true frontcourt running mate. But at this point of the Spurs rebuild, it's okay to draft that kind of guy! Things are going well!
Kornet has been a phenomenal addition, but Olynyk hasn't been a huge part of the rotation, as the Spurs have gone away from playing a typical "power forward" most of the time. Harrison Barnes and Keldon Johnson have played that role instead, and played it very well. Carter Bryant is still a question mark, and one day he might fill in at power forward, but the Spurs may see him as more of a wing.
Thus, why not take a chance on a guy who could eventually fit seamlessly next to Wemby? This is the perfect time to take home run swings, and hitting on a guy like Steinbach would be a grand slam. It's clear that the Spurs understand how important it is to surround Wemby with other frontcourt talent — hence the Kornet and Olynyk signings in the first place.
Do the Spurs need to hit on a draft pick this year? Nope. That's why it's the perfect time to take a risk, and Steinbach could be a very fun risk.
