This time last season, the San Antonio Spurs were preparing for yet another year selecting in the NBA Draft lottery. Now, they are going toe to toe with the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference Finals.

That dramatic turnaround is a clear result of them drafting Victor Wembanyama, Stephon Castle, and Dylan Harper as well as trading for De'Aaron Fox. Going from near the bottom of the NBA standings to being one of the four remaining teams in the championship race in a year's time is nothing short of remarkable.

Not just that, but they have had a tough road even getting to the Western Conference Finals. They beat an above-average defensive team, the Portland Trail Blazers, in the first round.

The Spurs followed that up by beating a physical Minnesota Timberwolves team that had previously made the Western Conference Finals in back-to-back years.

The Spurs are already well ahead of schedule

No matter how the Western Conference Finals go, this season has already been a massive success for San Antonio. Winning 62 games and making it to the West Finals all in one year after being a lottery team last season is an unprecedented turnaround.

Making the NBA Finals would be the icing on the cake, let alone winning a championship this season.

The goal was always to build a sustainable winner, and making it this far, this fast, is proof that the Spurs' rebuild worked.

The Spurs are gaining valuable playoff experience in real time

Entering the playoffs, the biggest knock against this team was their lack of playoff experience. What hasn't been discussed nearly as much is that the Spurs are gaining valuable playoff experience in real time.

The Spurs have played 15 playoff games thus far and counting. Better still, they have played exceedingly well despite that lack of experience.

After all, they previously came back from down by 20 on the road against the Blazers to win by 20. The Spurs also pulled out an impressive Game 1 double overtime win against the Thunder while on the road.

It's clear that this team is so talented they can make up for lack of experience while going toe to toe with more seasoned teams. If they can knock off the Thunder, who have been the best team in the NBA over the last two seasons, San Antonio would have not just exceeded expectations but shattered them.
