The San Antonio Spurs are in a unique position. This Alamo City squad is as young and hungry as we have ever seen. Nearly the entirety of their core could be placed among the top 25 under 25. Even at the top of the Spurs' crux lies Victor Wembanyama, who is 21 years old. Leading the charge by his side is a still youthful De'Aaron Fox and the reigning Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle.
Diving further into the roster, the likely starter at small forward, Devin Vassell, is 24, key bench pieces in Keldon Johnson and Jeremy Sochan are under 25, and don't forget about the Spurs' two home run draft picks, Dylan Harper and Carter Bryant.
All in all, there is no questioning how young this Spurs team is. While it presents the Silver and Black with an opportunity to grow into a potential dynasty, it isn't all rainbows and butterflies.
The Spurs young core is lacking experience
It's easy to get excited about a team full of young players. The group is bubbling with upside and presents optimism for future success. But with the bountiful amount of youth comes early struggles.
As many expect the Spurs to launch out of the gate firing as one of the best in the west, there is a strong possibility they take some lumps. The vast majority of teams in the Western Conference have been battle-tested and trained with the knowledge of how to win. This Spurs team is lacking that.
The playoffs are one of the best spots to learn how your team truly operates. Teams like the Denver Nuggets and Golden State Warriors have years of experience under their belts and will use that to their advantage. Meanwhile, hardly anyone on this current Spurs roster has encountered a playoff series.
The Spurs veterans will need to make a strong impact
It will be up to veterans Harrison Barnes and newcomers Luke Kornet and Kelly Olynyk to provide tips and advice to the youngsters. While they may not serve a massive part in the success of the team on the court, their presence could make a huge impact.
As the team is almost entirely constructed by young players, many of them are still coming into their own. Wembanyama himself is still figuring out how he can use his talents to the highest ability. This is especially the case for Harper and Bryant, who have yet to hit an NBA floor.
With so many minutes divvied up to blossoming players, the Spurs may not be ready to leap over the top of the conference. There will be plenty of bumps and bruises along the way as the youthful Spurs figure out who they are. While you should still be excited for what's to come from this Spurs squad, make sure to temper your expectations.
